Hey my friend and I recently got into arcade cabinets so hopefully someone can help. My friend just bought a Maximum Hangtime pcb off ebay and everything seems to work fine except some of the images (main logo, nba logo, player pics, team logos, court image, etc) seem to be missing pixels? I have included some images so you can see what I am talking about. During startup all of the roms come up good.

Also, on the board itself there are three red led's, two of them light up and one does not. I'm not sure what that means or if it's even related. In the picture its hard to see which one is not lit up, it's the one on the far right.

I'm inclined to believe that this is a RAM issue. unfortunately those are chips that are soldered in directly. if it was a ROM issue, then I would think you'd be missing certain graphics entirely.

nonetheless, go into Test mode and go under Diagnostics and run the CPU Board Test. see if any errors come up. it's probably a good idea to reseat all the roms anyway, that's all the socketed chips you find on the board.

take the board to a flat surface, generally I take some folded bubblewrap to set underneath the board (that way it doesn't get flexed/bent and won't scratch whatever surface it's on up :)) and with your thumbs at each end of every rom, just press downward. if it makes a creeking sound, then that's good.

try the game again then. don't worry about the 3rd LED light, it doesn't matter, I don't even remember what it's for... probably should dig my UMK3 board out again sometime soon.

good luck.

Ran the CPU test, no errors came up.

Reseated the roms, lots of creaking, but still no good :(

Any other suggestions? Would I have to replace the board itself if it is a ram issue?

well, I guess these boards are easier to work on than their Japanese counterparts. you could go and replace all the RAMs, or send it to someone that can fix that sort of thing too. (channelmanic does that)

the Midway Wolf unit boards were prone to problems like these, you'll find a lot of MK3 boards with similar problems. I personally would have it fixed, cause the game runs, so I don't think it's a CPU issue or something overly serious, and they're getting more and more scarce, not worth chucking it if it can be fixed.

deciphering which RAM it is too can be a pain in the ass as well, then you get into logic probes and things of that nature.

often times you can find Wolf unit boards, like old MK3 or UMK3 or Hangtime ones that are non-working because they just don't have ROMs or something like that, and you can just swap your components over to that and see if that works. it's a lot of trial and error shit I'm afraid. :(
