Hi all, I bought a NBA Jam 4 player arcade machine recently and everything seems to work so far but when starting up Rom UG22 comes up red. Was wondering whether anyone knows what this Rom is for and if I can fix it or will I have to buy a new pcb and exchange Roms? Thanks

Welcome to KLOV! NBA Jam is one of my favs so congrats on the purchase. As for the rom error, it's entirely possible that chip is just bad. If you look at the pcb there should be labels on the different chips unless they've fallen off from age. I don't know offhand what UG22 does, but it may just be one of the socketed program roms. Someone online can easily burn you a replacement and that may fix the problem. It's possible something else is causing the error besides that rom itself. Does the game play at all? For what it's worth, I have a Mortal Kombat machine that gives a rom error on but still works fine. I've read where someone else had the same problem, but the game worked fine.

When I saw it up for sale I had to buy it, also one of my favorites from long ago. The game works fine, sound and picture, I was just interested to know what this ROM did because I didn't want it causing a problem in the future. If I can find a replacement that would be great.

Looking at Caesar, it's listed as a graphics ROM.

The game will run, but somewhere will be a bit of corrupted graphics. Where it will be and how bad it will be depends on the failure of the ROM. It could be as simple as 1 bad bit... or as bad as the whole ROM. You won't probably notice a single bit being bad.

I haven't noticed any bad graphics yet but will keep an eye out knowing that, thanks for your quick reply's, channelmanic are you able to burn these roms?

Yes.

I just need to know what it says under the label on the ROM. It'll probably be a 27c040 or 27c4001 but I need to know the speed. Is it a -15, -12, or -10?

I think it used 8 meg roms on that board. I know hangtime does. Then again, it might be jumper selectable. Im pretty sure 100ns or 120ns will work.

512KB x 8 bit = 4Mb ;)

I'm thinking -120 but wanted to be for sure. I could just burn and sell him a -10 and play it safe.

is the rom speed like latency? (kinda like old computer RAM) where the smaller number = faster

Not latency but rather cycle time. Faster is generally better.

OK,

Piece of cake... 27C4001-10 or 27C040-10 will work there.

I'll PM you.
