Hi guys, new to the site and really green to arcades I use to play growing up as a kid. I know very little and what I do I have taught my self over the last couple of weeks. So with that being said here is my problem. I took out my NBA JAM board and sound board and replaced it with a NBA JAM T.E board and sound board I picked up off ebay this week. Everything went smooth but my only issue is some sound distortion. Sounds like a bad radio channel. Never had the issue before replacing both boards. Thanks

you might have some sort of capacitor or electronics related problem with the TE sound board. the sound boards are identical between the two games, but you would have to swap all the roms from one to the other.

that's kind of difficult to digest if you're new, cause those rom chip legs are easy to bend and break.

that would be my best guess though. OR, did both of your sound boards have the volume adjustment pot attached? with the game off try just spinning the TE pot back and forth (as if you're turning the volume all the way down, then all the way up, and back and forth repeatedly). this is called "wiping" the pots, sometimes they get dirty and it MIGHT contribute to your problem, but more than likely not.

try that, if that doesn't work, I say swap your TE roms over to the regular Jam sound board. if you want advice on how to do that, get a 1/4" flathead screwdriver, and get back to me. lol

ok im not sure on both having the volume adjustment attached. I do know that I hooked the T.E board and sound board up exactly as the original jam boards were in. My cabinet does have a volume control mounted in the machine. The distortion is hit or miss though. I turned it on this morning and the distortion was there. Later afternoon it wasn't. Are you familiar with the NBA JAM boards? Only asking because I have something hooked up in the pins between player 1 and player 3 pins on the board. When I looked at my manual it said that area of use was NOT USED. So i unhooked it. I know probably doesn't help but that's all I got. Could that being unplugged affect the sound?

so it is an issue with the sound board? anyone? constant static is what Im hearing. thanks

It could be an issue with your power supply or jamma harness wiring.

Those games along with Mortal Kombat make use of -5 volt.

Check the line for that if you have a multimeter. Or make sure the jamma harness you are using has that wire.

constant static?

I don't know, way I read it was your NBA Jam board was fine and it's just the TE one that's doing this.

if the -5 was missing, you'd feel entire sections of your soul getting ripped out, cause the sound these games make when -5 isn't present hurts to hear, badly. :)

Yes that is correct! I can run my original NBA JAM boards in with no sound issues at all. Plug in both T.E boards and start up and static starts. I can snap some photos of the insides tomorrow just to see if that helps in anyway possible. All the sounds for the game are correct(even though one time music cut out in one quarter of play), just has this static through the speakers. Is it anyway possible it could be the soundboard? The guy I purchased it from said he couldn't test the sound board, so I don't know if it is the board itself or something on my end. He said he would pay for repair of the soundboard but I hate to pay for shipping something that might not even need repair and it be something elsewhere. Any ideas, advice. thanks for all the help so far. I have no idea what the -5 is.

Yes, it's possible.
Since TE is a rom upgrade on the same hardware as NBA Jam, why don't you swap your TE sound roms over to the regular Jam sound board and see if you still have static. (and vice versa)
(I see mecha187 has already mentioned trying this)

Heck, just try re-seating all the socketed chips on the TE sound board first.
Try swapping the ribbon cables.

I have tried swapping the ribbon cables, nope, still there. I am not exactly sure what to do with re-seating all the socketed chips. Still learning. If it could be an issue with the sound board I can get it serviced - shipping.
