NBA Jam Sound issue

flip the cable on the sound board so that the red wire is on the opposite end of the 20 pin connector (furthest away from the heatsink and big cap near the power/volume pot connector). that's how it should be, let us know what changes.

I agree with alpha on the fact that those ribbon cables can fail (it's unlikely tho). I've had a few fail on early 90's PC's where you can see the wires pulled away from the connector or just plain missing when you look at the side of the connector itself.

i'm also working on a spare TE soundboard i have that's also missing the crystal, what's with that? i see so many missing the crystal @ Y1.

Out of the 7 NBA jam motherboards and games I have played and worked on. I found issues with two of the cables. Maybe I am just lucky. Not sure if it's common or not.

The crystal at Y1 Stick up and can easily get damage and knocked off in shipping.
I got a spare Y1 crystals if you need some (Short can to prevent being knock off again).

I know that a shorted crystal will cause the main board to reboot after the intro.

when i hooked up the board i have with a damaged U3 and missing y1 crystal it just bonged at me like 7 times didn't notice it reset tho. but i really didn't have it powered up for more than a couple minutes

i have tons of spare ribbon cable and 18" cables for more freedom to move the boards around (in my fs thread). I haven't had any issues with the ones from midway boards i've had but as i said definitely a couple from PC's that i've worked on. still a low number maybe 5 of 500 (guesstimate).

As for the crystal, i just got my order from Bob Roberts containing (2) of them, one for the board that i have and one for a spare. i appreciate the offer but you should hold onto them just in case :)

OP: let us know what the switching of the cable does, I am anxious to know.

The backwards cable was my mistake, I was messing around with all the wires and accidently put them on backwards...I was getting no sound with the backwards cable, but I am back to getting the very faint sound. Also both of the red lights will light up now but the one goes out after it boots up.

I never noticed how fragile those crystals are. lol. I have so many of these kinds of sound boards and never knocked one off before. I suppose if you knocked one off and install a new one, you can add some silicone to secure it in place.

When I recieved the board I was told by the seller that the Games would reboot after the introduction. After verfiying the problem, Closer inspection revealed the crsystal was physically damaged. Now I could have replaced it with the same size can but I decided to replace it with a short can to prevent this problems from occuring again.

wow that crystal looks ok to me, the short can is definitely an upgrade imo tho. i might have to take you up on this some time.

Where can I find a working soundboard? After fiddling with the one I have for days now I cannot figure out why I am not getting sound, so I have just decided to find a new one.

do an advanced search in the FS forum, or make a WTB thread. Or there's always eBay.
