Im a noob and trying to research this as best I can. We have been trying to get a good NBA Jam / Max hangtime game in our office and having some issues with the guy who is supplying it for us.

The game he had was an NBA Hangtime cabinet, running NFL Blitz.

I bought a Max Hangtime board from a user on this site.

I gave the guy the board and after several weeks of excuses, he says that his technician needs to swap the joysticks to get it to work. I call him a few days later and he says that the board I supplied him with is no good, but that he found a NBA Jam TE for $25 and they will install that, but they have to swap the joysticks back. He said something about how the Max hangtime board had a "hard drive" and used computerized joysticks, vs NBA Jam using the 8 way joysticks..

Now, I was under the impression that these games were all a straight swap, that the board and hardware were basically interchangeable. Is this true, or does what he say hold some truth?

Hangtime and Max Hangtime do not require Hard Drives or optical Joysticks. NBA Showtime is what needs optical sticks and a HD, as well as the Blitz series. He is wrong.

I had a good feeling that he was bullshitting me, thus this thread.

I am most likely going to try swapping in the max hangtime board myself after it arrives, The guy I bought the board from on here seems very honest and said it was tested and working, whereas all I get from this guy is excuses and bs.

I have another question.

If I have a working NBA Jam board / sound board, can I swap chips from a (broken) NBA Hangtime PCB? I understand that Hangtime boards have a built in sound board, so I'm guessing this isn't possible but would like to know for sure.

Thanks

NBA Jam/Jam TE run on a Midway T-unit board, whereas NBA Hangtime/Maximum Hangtime run on a Midway Wolf unit board.

they're not hardware interchangeable, if that's what the question was. you can however find "dead" boards on ebay all the time, and I', fairly certain the roms in most cases are still good on those.

by the other guy's definition, what does he mean it's "no good"?

I'm not sure, I still haven't been able to get the board back, nor have I received a definite answer as to what is wrong with the board (hangtime).

I'll hopefully be getting a NJ:TE board (dead) in the next week or so to swap out the chips, I was just hoping I could do the same with the hangtime chips but your answer tells me I can't.

Thanks!

When you say they are not hardware interchangable, does this also mean I cannot simply swap the PCBs out?

In other words, am I able to upgrade an original NBA JAM to NBA Hangtime by simply pulling out the 2 NBA JAM boards and replacing them with the NBA Hangtime board?

It looks as if most of the wiring would plug in ok, but not quite all of it so I am thinking it's not possible without modification, but you are the experts :)

I thought you were talking about exchanging roms with one board to the other. you can't do that. but as they're both JAMMA games, you can take out NBA Jam boards and replace them with a Hangtime one. you can do that. even the 3 and 4 player harnesses are the same between the games.

hope that answers it this time. :)

Sorry for the confusion, You have answered each of my questions correctly, I just keep changing the questions. :)

I have just tried swapping the hangtime board into the NBA JAM cabinet, the main harness obviously plugs in fine, but none of the other plugs seem to fit anything (except player 3 & 4). There is no output on the screen at all.

I tried adjusting the +5 a little and I tried changing the dips to get into a test mode but there is just no output whatsoever, so I put the NBA JAM boards back in and it's working fine. I guess the board is just bad, as I was told.
