Hi looking into buying a NBA JAM original game in original cab but the seller is saying that the start buttons are no good and the cp wires need to be fixed. What does that mean?? Do i need a new wire harness for the cp panel. Is there anyone local who can fix this prob?? I also have a pacman cocktail table that needs to be serviced. Joysticks and sticking.

The microswitches are a 3 point snap switch - you lever in two points, and then clip it into the third. You can get them from Marco Specialty - they do break and when they do, they don't work. I think they are around $4 each.

As far as wiring, if it's a switch problem, it's unlikely to be the wiring. I recently fixed one in the Omaha area, and the switches were just out of the unit - I replaced them and it worked fine except for one switch, which would stick on - I found the lower contact would deflect under pressure, and the side of the bottom of the switch would be displaced, and the switch would then stick.

I'd lift the CP cover and see what you see. It sounds repairable, but I'd doubt it's the wires - it's more likely a busted switch(es).

I would recommend checking all of the wires to make sure they are all connected to their respective microswitches. Look under the control panel, and follow all of the wires. There might be one that came off. That would be the first place I would start. The actual push buttons are not bad, and I would hesitate to think the wiring is bad. This might be a good thing because you can use this to bring down the price, and start with the easiest fixes. You can get microswitches for $1 apiece and wiring is next to nothing. If the rest of the game works (e.g., pcb, sound board, power supply and monitor) this "button" problem should not hold you back. NBA Jam was my first game, and remains my favorite. Good luck.

I disagree. Most 'switch' problems I have come across were due to poor solder or a poor crimp at the switch. I always suspect the micro (or leaf) and the wiring and inspect both before considering the repair complete.

I'd say try to knock $50 off the price and work your way up from there. Whatever discount you walk away with will likely cover the cost of new parts, if necessary.

Thanks everyone for their input, i have talked the seller down to 350 for the game. Wish you guys were closer to come and take a look with me. Ill go and take a look and look at everything you guys just said. thanks again.

The switches on NBA Jam are standard spade connectors. They aren't soldered, and the wires are around 22 gauge or 20 gauge - very small.

Most of them get tugged off by moving things around or not being careful.

That is true if we are talking about a stock game, but who knows what the story of this game is? When I bought my dedicated Jam, it had been converted, and then converted back with a kit. The wires were all soldered on, so I had to fix them myself. It sounds like he has not opened the cp yet, so they could be soldered, and if so I would DEFINITELY check that first.
