I almost have my new pin in the 99% complete range. I gave it a test run tonight and now the upper flipper is dead. Would this need a new coil? It seems rare the coil would be dead. Searching the manual now. Any ideas KLOVERS?

Does the coil shaft move freely? That would be a good first indicator if it's burned out or not...

Try the easy stuff first (in no order)
1. Are the wires soldered on to the coil?
2. Has the pin in the plunger and link for the flipper broken?
3. Check for power at coil.
4. Go into Diagnostics and test the flipper coil.
5. Check the fuses on the flipper board. Remove and check with DMM.

That's the stuff I would check first. If the coil is getting power and the flipper sounds like it is trying to work, but won't move, could be a stuck plunger in the coil sleeve. Remove, file and replace. Replace worn sleeve too if you have one. Make sure that there is vertical play in the flipper shaft. You should be able to grab the flipper and move it up and down just slightly. If it is tight and won't move up and down it might be binding.

Good luck!

also check the wiring to the flipper switch. the upper flipper is on the shorter of the two switches on the right side. Also the flipper board in the cabinet has an LED that lights up when the flipper switch is pressed. Make sure that it is lighting up.

Just also check to make sure the contact points are clean on the switches. I had hours of frustration to just have my brother who knows nothing about pins sand the points and it worked.. I felt stupid then..

That post about flipper contacts just made me remember that after doing some work under my playfield the right flipper wouldn't work. Pushed on some fuses on the flipper board and the bent, replaced those, but still nothing. Turns out that when pulling the playfield in and out I hit the flipper switches and messed them all up. Just needed to loosen the screws and make sure they lined up and were bent right and everything worked okay after that.

Thanks wonta! I found one in Detroit that had a few issues. So far I have been able to resolve most of them with the help of the KLOV community. It is in pretty decent shape and a blast to play. According to the owner it sat unused for 16 years so I am not surprised that issues keep popping up. (I have been playing the heck out of it) Hopefully once I get this flipper issue worked out, that will be the last one for a while!

The upper flipper switch is the shorter of the two flipper switches on the right flipper button

Okay, after all the suggestions this is what I found.

1. All the wiring seems good
2. I do see one LED light on the flipper board when I push the right button
3. The solder points are all good and good diode
4. During diagnostic I can see it pulsing like it is trying to move (after about 10 tries it fired)

I am starting to think a replacement coil is needed.

Thanks

So if both right flippers are firing properly should 2 LEDs light? I think there are 3 LEDs on the flipper board.

Thanks

Correct, you should see two lights being lit on the flipper board.
put a piece of paper in between the longer of the two switch blades on the right flipper button and try again

Sounds like it might be a cracked fuse holder on the flipper board or the flipper is binding. An old dirty coil sleeve, mushroomed plunger and no vertical play in the flipper could stop a flipper from moving.

I would take the flipper mech apart, clean it and put it back together and see what happens.

Keep us posted.

Plunger is very smooth and it slides in and out without any issues...

I am checking the fuse holders now, they seem solid. Also going to check the right switch like Geese suggested.

Just found out my ramp diverter coil is doing the same thing. When i test I can see the plunger shaking trying to fire...

Thanks

I had to remove the ramp diverter and clean the shaft and the bushing on the playfield. The diverter coil is pretty wimpy and the whole assembly has to be pretty easy to move for it to work correctly. Also check the coil sleeve and the plunger to make sure there isn't any binding.

Would a little WD40 work or is that a big no no?

Big no no. One of the biggest. WD 40 has no place to ever be used on a pinball machine. In fact, it shouldn't be used to lubricate most things. It was designed as a water displacer. And there is almost nothing on a pinball machine that needs lubrication.

Thanks guys! The upper flipper was due to the switch not working right. I put a little steel wool to it and it works like a charm! Now back to the diverter.

Thanks!
