Narrow Edge Connectors?

I've been going through a number of PCBs lately, and I've noticed several with edge connectors narrower than they should be.

A couple appear to just be poorly designed/built bootlegs. However, a couple others appear to have been modified to be a little narrower (cut/sanded on the ends of the PCB edge connector).

In the worst cases, the difference is a couple of mm, which is enough such that the housing could be shifted far enough one way or the other for pins to contact the wrong pads (bad), so you have to be very careful aligning it properly.

Has anyone else noticed PCBs with too-narrow edge connectors?
Have the standard connector housing widths, or end clearances, changed over the years?
Just trying to understand why someone would make such a mod...

If anyone else has seen it... has anyone attempted to fix it? If so, how did you go about it?
