So in my quest to own all my favorite games in arcade form, there is one obstacle in my way; the great naomi system

At least a dozen of my favorites are on it, and while im aware of its similarity to the dreamcast, i know virtually nothing about it

Some run on carts some run on something else?
Naomi 2?
Jamma goes to i/o for specific brands?
Needs an amp? How does that wire in?

Please take me to school on the naomi! Tell me everything you know!

I believe if you are using the Capcom I/O board then you do not need an amp, however, if you are using the Sega I/O board you need one.

Pretty much the Naomi is JVS instead of JAMMA. The Capcom I/O board lets you plug in a Naomi system into a JAMMA cabinet as it takes the JAMMA input for most of the I/O (video, speakers, buttons). The output on the Capcom board are two mono audio outs, a VGA cable, and a USB cable for the inputs (a kick harness can be plugged into the capcom I/O board).

The gd rom uses a jvs power supply though right?

The games i want to own are:
Crazy taxi
Monkey ball
street fighter zero 3 upper
Marvel vs capcom 2
Capcom vs snk 2
Rival schools 2
Doa 2
Virtua fighter 4 final tuned
Puyo puyo fever
powerstone 2
Cannon spike
ikaruga

So it looks like i need a naomi 2 with the gd rom. What all am i going to need to make this work in a non jvs cab?

Kind of embarrassing but hey, trying to step my game up!

To run marvel vs capcom 2 all u need is the Naomi 1 or 2 motherboard and a capcom I/O, power supply and cart. That's all I have and I can play every Naomi 1 cart. The gd rom requires a dimm and more cables plus the rom drive, not sure about the jvs I/O and amp set up but I know a lot of people prefer the capcom I/O. I'm selling a marvel vs capcom 2 cart as we speak if ur interested. Also capcom vs snk 1 which is a lot cheaper than 2 and is a cart not a disk and chip

Based off the games u want a Naomi 2 motherboard should be the starting point

Capcom vs snk 2 is a pretty big one for me. Im willing to dedicate a whole cabinet to it if i need to.

Plus, i dont know what a dimm is lol

Seriously, i need schooled in a big way on this hardware!

The dimm boards are pretty much just extra memory that is required for certain games. It goes into the slot where the carts typically go. You will also hear Net Dimms which are dimms with net booting ability.

If you ever want to use the CF-Drive instead of the GD-rom drive for games (www.summitarcade.com, i think), then you will need a Net Dimm board. They are more expensive, however.

As far as the GD-Rom drive, I don't think you necessarily need a JVS power supply, as the Capcom I/O board has the power connector to go from it to the Naomi board, the GD-rom just sits in between the Naomi board and the power supply (in this case the I/O board).

The I/O board gets its power from the JAMMA connector.

So it goes i/o - gdrom - naomi?

Wow, sounds like the capcom i/o is essential.

Gosh...im going to be 500 into this before i can play anything lol

Oh well. I just want to make sure i have everything i need and that its hooked up properly. I have no idea what some of these games take. Just getting ready to take a deep plunge into the glory that is naomi

You missed a 'T', but yes I sell everything you need to get going with Compact Flash except the motherboard.
Once you have the CF drive you can buy just about any Naomi game for 25.00 from me.
One thing to note, if using the Capcom I/O, you will most likely need two power supplies if using a net dimm board.
The capcom I/O isnt always strong enough to power both the motherboard and the DIMM.

Can i use a medium res monitor for this or what?

I really feel like i need to be walked through this with one assuming i know nothing.

Toplessz, we will be in contact. Most definitely. Though it says on your site you are out of cfds.

Im out of stock on the black box models. I wont be getting more, they are a pain in the butt to put together and they are arent as reliable as the PCB version I have.
The PCB version is currently 150.00 with a free game card.

Things you will need to run the Compact Flash system:
1. Net DIMM updated to 4.02 (I can help you update it, or you can buy one from me already updated)
2. SCSI Cable (most aftermarket ones dont work, I sell the originals)
3. GD-ROM Power Cord (I sell one for the CF drive)
4. BIOS for Naomi1 must be version G or H (I sell these for 10.00)
5. Naomi1 or Naomi 2 Motherboard

There is a 30 mhz and a 15 mhz dipswitch on the motherboard.

Thanks! This is all really helpful!

So for a game like capcom vs snk 22 i will need a net dimm yes? And when you say second power supply, do you mean like the kind i would already have in a jamma cab or do i need a special power supply?

You will need one that puts out 3.3 volts.

Last December I sold a complete Sega Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Naomi Jamma Motherboard and Power Supply for $250 shipped. The fan on the Naomi system was a little noisy, but it worked fine. Just a data point. There is one with Zombie Revenge for $250 shipped on ebay right now that ends in 38 minutes. And I just happend to search NAOMI in arcade and its the first listing.

Well if you buy a cart version of CvsS 2 then no you dont need a DIMM.
If you want to run the Compact Flash version of CvsS2 then yes you need a Net DIMM.
Then there is the GD-ROM version, needs normal dimm and gd-rom drive.
Same exact Game, different media

DO NOT.... I repeat... DO NOT run the Naomi systems above 5.1v at the power connector to the system.

Doing so WILL fry the tiny LCX16245 buffer chips and give you random crashes, lockups, intermittent failures during self tests, etc.

DO and I repeat DO check the memory backup capacitor on the Naomi 1 boards that sits between the battery and the 8 pin EEPROM chip. These WILL leak and eat traces on the board. REPLACE THEM if they have not yet been replaced.
