Hello all,
I have a friend who just picked sweet dedicated Naomi cabinet at auction. It looked to be completely working. But when he got it home, it had no controls whatsoever. You couldn't even coin up a credit. From what he has read, this is often indicative of a bad IO board. When he got into the CP, he found a spare IO board as well. I kind of figured that someone bought an IO Board to fix the problem and it didn't so they just kept the other in as a spare and sold the game cause they couldn't fix it. So here are my questions.
1. How common is this boards failure in a Naomi system.
2. Is there another failure that could cause this (I kind of thought it might be broken solder joints or a faulty USB at the USB connector.)
3. Does anyone sell or repair these IO boards.
4. Is there a good way to test these board.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

you can find em on ebay I think. I think a user on here had a whole NAOMI lot for sale recently, but I'm not sure if that was a full package sale or if they were selling parts individually.

for the hell of it did you try a different USB cable?

the USB port on one of my NAOMI boards was actually physically broken (it worked, but the plastic guide inside the port was gone, so the cable didn't sit well). underneath the top cover though behind it is another USB port though. I wound up dremeling off the notch that covers the hidden port up and plugged into that.

I'd check that first before tinkering with the I/O boards.

if you want instructions for opening the case, remove the 4 screws holding the cart in, lift the cart out, then flip the main board over, there's about 8 screws underneath. unscrew those. then the top cover will pop off. you can reinsert the cart back in for testing purposes and see if the other port works. if not... then we'll move on to step 2. :)

I'll be up for awhile if you want to try it tonight, and I'll assist if I can.

I don't know anything about the JVS (I think that's what the "dedicated" NAOMI I/O is) ... I only have experience setting one up with a JAMMA I/O, but I can't see it being very difficult to figure out the other way.

there's like a black connector with all the I/O wiring on your board (and mine too actually)

double check your wiring going to that. like disconnect and reconnect it. make sure you don't have any broken wires. I don't know which is a ground wire.. Sega usually uses white for their grounds.

That USB connector on the side of the NAOMI board is known for getting physically broken. I have some replacement jacks - but don't have them listed on my website.

The broken USB plug was exactly what the problem was, now all the buttons are working and it credits up, The problem I'm having now is that neither joystick is working, I've went into the settings and changed digital to analog. Still no luck. Thanks again guys for your help. If anybody can think of anything else, please let me know.

digital will be used if you have a regular microswitch joystick. analog will be used if you actually have one of the analog Sanwas.

kind of mystified that only the joysticks won't work. I may or may not have mentioned, I know nothing about the JVS I/O, so I couldn't even tell you what pins to check on that black block connector (I'm assuming)

best I can come up with is that you check the grounds going to the joysticks.

never tinkered with any of the dedicated NAOMI cabs in our arcade.

Check the wiring all the way from the joysticks through the connectors all the way to the I/O board. Especially the ground as mecha suggested. Are the buttons and the joysticks all wired through the same connector?

Yes, the joysticks are wired with the buttons, they are the original analog joysticks, the game is Zombie Revenge, if that helps.

ohhh, then yes, you set it on Analog. :)

go into the various input tests, particularly the JVS Test. wiggle the joysticks around and see if any numbers change. if not, then try the Input Test.

I don't have analog joysticks, just my 8-way Happ Comps in my Zombie Revenge cab, so I don't know if there's a place you need to go to calibrate them or what.

there's another option on the main page of the test menu where you can do a "Backup Memory Clear" which is the same as a factory restore/default adjustment.

here's a link to the manual on Sega's site: http://www.segaarcade.com/pdfs/zombierevenge/zr-kit-manual.pdf

that's for the kit (like I have) but it should all still apply.

EDIT: I read the PDF, if you go into the GAME TEST MODE there will be an option for STICK SETTING. you might have to go through that and you rotate the joystick through all its extremes and that way the game will know the volume limits for the joystick so it's calibrated properly. I'd still do the BACKUP DATA CLEAR on the System Test page for though.

That was exactly the problem, after we calibrated the joysticks to maximum and minimum, they started working.
