I have an otherwise nice Nanao MS-8 25" EGA/CGA monitor. I never hear it degauss, and it has some degauss issues that never clear up. The degauss coil *is* connected. Is there a way to force this monitor to degauss? Is there a switch or anything that would disable the degauss function?

Thanks,
Wade

Not that I recall. You can try a manual degaussing coil for best effect. Somebody's bound to recommend using a corded drill, but I tried one today and it sucks ass compared to a proper deguassing coil...

Yes, the electric drill method does suck. But it's better than nothing at all.

You probably have a bad degauss thermistor, and the thing is just never firing.

I already tried a drill and it didn't do jack. :(

It would probably be easier for me to try a manual degauss, than replace the thermistor, though I might try replacing it as a long-term solution.

I don't have a manual tool. Can I just take the coil from a spare monitor and plug it into 120V AC for a couple of seconds? Will it burn up if I leave it connected for very long?

Yes, you can.

It sure will! But it'll probably melt first, then burn. :D

This is exactly what I do. I have a coil I scavenged from a very large (like 27" or so) television set. I coiled it up smaller so it's about 7 inches in diameter, and spliced a power cord onto it. Stand a few feet away, plug it in, move it in circles coming close to the screen - get up to the screen, moving in circles, move away, then unplug when you get a few feet away. Works great.
