I've got a Nanao monitor from a Sega Super GT that is a little bit blurry. Is there a (reasonably) easy way to adjust to convergence of the guns? Or is this called "focus"?

The other monitor (twin cab) is the sharpest monitor I've ever seen. If this monitor wasn't next to the sharp one, I don't know if I would even have noticed it. But... always room for improvement :)

I've read that some monitors allow the focus to be controlled by a pot on the flyback.

When I'm back in front of it, I'll see about getting the specific model number.

Thanks!

in most cases the focus knob should take care of focus problems.

there are other factors that can contribute to a picture looking blurry though.

if your contrast is turned way up, or the color drive/bias controls are turned way up, it can prevent you from getting the picture to focus.

the other common cause is just a bad flyback.

try the focus knob first, if that doesn't get it, try turning the contrast down (your colors might just be bleeding), try focus knob again. if turning contrast down doesn't help, then figure your flyback is going bad.

alternatively, your screen/brightness can contribute to this too. make sure that a black background is black. you don't want to see any retrace lines or grey in those black areas. contrast ideally, if the monitor's adjusted right, should only be turned up to the point that you don't see color bleeding off text.

the final item, is to make sure the tube is actually clean. Windex is your friend. :)

good luck.

Thanks.

Below is a picture of the inside of the monitor. It's not the best, but it serves its purpose.

The control board on the right (of which you can only see the back) has no focus pots. However, the flyback on the left has two pots. Are these two focus? If so, why are there two? Is one gun fixed and you can adjust the other two?

I'm confident I've got contrast/brightness adjusted well. Also, while the CRT glass was filthy and cleaning it with windex made a huge difference, there is still a difference between this monitor and the other one.

the control board, you have to read the backside of it to see which of your color bias controls are at the locations of the pots on the other side... it's difficult, such a horseshit design. it's even worse in our Daytona USA twin, for whatever reason they put the adjustment boards facing the steering wheel... yeah, the same steering wheel you have to remove 4 bolts and hope you don't crush your nuts when taking it out to adjust the monitor, that's real intelligent. they don't even pop out like a Wells or Hantarex or about any other monitor manufacturer would .. they're screwed in.

but anyway, yes, this flyback is also upside down compared to a normal one... the Screen (master brightness, if you will) control is on the bottom, and the Focus is on the top. I swear it's the other way around on other monitors...

Focus is always controlled by the flyback, the focus wire that runs to the neck socket is attached to the flyback after all. :)

try these, good luck

and don't sweat trying to get them perfect.... you'll never get them perfect. they were probably never perfect from the factory back in the 90s either. they're all different.

and don't mess with convergence, ever. I've observed on these Sanwa monitors in our Daytona twin that there's like 2 ways to get the focus good, one you can see the red green and blue convergence bleeding, or whatever it's called, and then there's another way where you won't notice that. not sure if the Nanao's the same way. that's in our Daytona 2, I have to figure out the fucking brightness control on that one, it's not on the remote board.

Thanks and sorry for the delay... was out of town.

There are two pots on the flyback. Do you happen to know why there are two and what each might do?

Re-read Mecha's post...... the top one is "focus" and the bottom is the "screen"

Duh. Sorry for missing that. That is what I get for reading the response while away from the game and then doing a reply a few days later.
