Did they just change the control panel, and it was a popular cabinet? I don't know that I have seen anything like this before. Please help!

Yeah. Looks like they removed the Sub-woofer, replaced the kick panel piece, and installed the coin door assembly in the middle.

How much would you value this cabinet at, if you were going to buy it for a MAME cabinet? The monitor is not working and the buttons need to be replaced, on top of the obvious sanding and paint job it needs.

Personally, with a non-working monitor and the condition it's in, I wouldn't pay more than $100. It's got some pretty good water damage.

Does it look repairable to you, will a decent amount of sanding level it out? Or will it still look like crap after painting? I am not looking to put a ton of effort into it, just want it to be presentable...ha ha.

WRONG! It's not Primal Rage, The CP is wrong. Guardians of the Hood. is there a 3rd j/s position on the cp underneath that cpo?

Except for the control panel and the missing subwoofer/coin door location, it's the same cabinet. Would you argue that? It's just like saying Mortal Kombat 2-4 are the exact same cabinet as NFL Blitz, just the CP is different (4 player vice 2 player).

Big ugly 25" cabinet with a broken monitor is worth about the same as whatever board is inside it.

You'd have to hold a rusty butter knife to the delicate fleshy underseam of my coin purse to get me to take ownership of that thing.

It's the same in a general sense but that doesn't make it Primal Rage. Guardians of the Hood is much more likely what this was. I'm sure it could be converted to Primal rage fairly easily if desired.

Hey, $50 and you want to make a mame cabinet, then yes it would be worth it to you.

The board is Soul Edge II and I want to use the cabinet for MAME. I might be able to get it for about $50, it is a local cabinet.

Hmm... If it's free, maybe. Your call though.

It reminds me of a lot of these...

Just sayin'

I am sure I can manage. I can rebuild engines/transmissions, and build computers. A little woodwork isn't going to scare me off...lol. I just started restoring my first cabinet (Street Fighter 2 Z-back), so I am no expert. I figured I would ask the experts first, to see if the cabinet was salvageable for my purpose.

I don't plan on putting shelf paper on it either, just black paint...ha ha. I figured new buttons and joysticks, a Celeron Sandy Bridge computer I have sitting here, and a 27" LCD monitor should do it. I will re-work the control panel to fit in a trackball though.

Are you anti-MAME, or just anti this cabinet?

No, just yanking your chain a little. It's a personal preference when it comes to MAME cabs. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. I'm just not a fan of the oversized control panel style cab. I can understand why people do it - to accommodate lots of buttons, I just prefer simpler panels that look more like classic-era stuff.

I'm sure with some TLC this could be made to look quite nice. Heck, I'm in the process of converting a beast of a former Zazzon former Champion Baseball former God knows what cab into a horizontal MAME. The only indication this was ever a classic is the Sega/Zazzon sticker inside. The particle board is a mess, and don't even ask me about the control panel.

In other words, it's gonna take some work to get it looking decent. In the end, it'll be my MAME cab. Plenty of others might not like it, but if I do, who cares. So if you want this cab and can get it cheaply, go for it, man. I wish you the best on the project. Snap pictures along the way so we can all see the transformation.

Cheers!

I don't plan on jamming up the CP. Since it was said that this used to have three controllers, I figured I'd make some room between the two and add a trackball. I am not going to change the size of the CP at all, going to try to keep the cabinet as original looking as possible. I won't get too crazy with buttons, probably 6 or 7 buttons, and the addition of a coin button next to the P1/P2 buttons. I'd even be willing to keep the original monitor, if it is a cheap fix. It looks like only one color is working, it almost in black and white...ha ha. Hopefully I can get the thing for $50. I am going to sell the board, so if someone buys it for $40-$50 I will have basically paid nothing for it.

I blogged about the SF2 cabinet I started on, but have only gotten around to removing the hideous spray paint job over the original red vinyl. I will probably set up a thread here about it too, when I have a little more time:
