Namco's StarLuster for the Nintendo Vs. is pretty cool! Video!

I filmed a quick video of Starluster for the Nintendo Vs. Unisystem and Dualsystem. It's pretty cool! Kind of reminds me of Star Raider for the Atari 800XL, but honestly, I don't even remember how that game played! :)

That's really cool ! It totally reminds me of Star Raiders, which I thought was just an awesome game at the time ;)

Very cool John. I just tried this on MAME the other night. It was confusing at first. Thanks for the video!

I guess I didn't understand how to play this. Some guy from YouTube set me straight.

This game is pretty DEEP!!

PURPOSE OF ADVENTURE MODE:
Find the 'Dark Planet' and destroy it.

MAP:
SELECT button to open map, move cursor and hit A button to jump. E=Enemy, *=Planet, B=Base, #=Asteroids. In Adventure mode, you can fire photon torpedoes by B button for long range attack. It can destroy an enemy unit with 4 to 8 hits, but number is limited.

COMBAT:
D-pad to turn, A to thrust, B to fire beam. Primary use horizontal turns and thurusting, and use vertical turns just for aiming purpose. There are 3 types of enemy units: Cyan: weak, Gray: medium, Purple: strong.

IMPORTANT: You can have only two beams on screen at once. If you fire third beam when you have two beams on screen, 1st beam disappears to have 3rd one on screen. Thus, you can not hit far enemy. DO NOT TAP B BUTTON TOO RAPIDLY!

FINDING BASE/PLANET:
1st, turn obliquely to find a blip. 2nd, turn horizontally so that bilp moves to just above of center of the radar. 3rd, thurust with A button and make blip close to the center of the radar. 4th, turn upward or downward so that blip moves upward. If blip moves very little when you turn vertially, stop turning. 5th, thurust with A button and you should see base/planet. In Adventure mode, you can get power ups at bases. Visit all bases so that you can get all types of power ups.

GETTING A 'KEY' (Adventure mode only):
When you destroy an enemy unit (without using photons), you get a right to get a 'key'. Then visit a planet and you can get a 'key'. Each of 7 planets have a unique key, you must correct all keys. If one of those planet is destroyed before you get the key from it, you are no longer able to complete adventure mode. But a planet is destroyed after you get the key from it, it is no problem.

FINDING THE DARK PLANET (Adventure mode only):
You can not get a key from cyan planet. But this planet is the 'door' to the dark planet. Once after you collect all 7 keys, visit the cyan planet. Players often call this planet 'Earth'. And open map, you see a flashing blip. Move cursor carefully so that it points exactly on the blip, an error of 1 pixel is not allowed. And jump, you finally enter the area around the 'dark planet'!

Dark planet appears in the area after you destroyed some enemies. But because dark planet does not move, you must find it by using same method to find base/planet.

TIP: A important thing to complete the adventure mode is to find good map. Maps are randomly generated, and sadly, it is very difficult to complete the game in most of maps. Restart the game again and again to find a good map. But even with a good map, it is still difficult to complete the game. But it is a great fun to challenge it if you understand the game completely!

That's pretty cool--thanks for posting it. I used to play 'Star Raiders' on my Atari 2600 a lot--this looks quite similar.

man, it should be a requirement for every new england arcade owner to own a vs cab...hopefully I can find one on my route to Ohio in Aug :)

Does anyone know what happened to the one they had at funspot? Had vs. tennis on both screens..

Wickedbass and I tried playing Vs. Tennis on it a few months back. The Red Tent was unplugged so we plugged it in. It had some major issues. Controls were non-responsive and the two sides were not talking to each other. So, yeah... busted.

aw, too bad...my gf and I had a blast with it when it was up! I think it was about a year ago, back when we first visited funspot. I remeber the machine even needed some tender love back then, but nothing too serious.

I was up at Funspot yesterday, and the red tent still wasn't running... I did get in a few rounds of Hogan's Alley though. :)

Yeah, I don't know what's up with their Red Tent. Maybe Brian and I can go up there and *attempt* to fix it. :) Maybe it's time to put Balloon fight in it?

Yeah, that was one of my favorite games.... After I figured out that you had to use the game setting controls on the deck to do different things... Made great use of the system.

EDIT:
NO WAIT... I AM THINKING OF A DIFFERENT GAME... The game I am thinking of was actually more like star luster.

ANY IDEAS???

Anyways, most people don't know this, but all of these games were designed by an alien race in another galaxy to identify and recruit new starfighters.
