This past weekend my wife and I took a quick trip down to Portland. The real reason I wanted to make the trip was to pick up a couple of games I bought over the last few weeks, but I presented it to her as a mini-vacation from the two year old.
So, we leave the house Friday evening, about an hour and a half later than I had planned. We get a little over an hour into the trip and decide to stop for dinner. I decided to take the next exit and the only thing even remotely interesting is a pizza joint named Infernos. So we walk in and my wife immediately turns to me and glares. I look around to see what I did and to my right is a fairly large game room filled with a few classics: Ms Pac (speed chip, of course) and Wacko, as well as many Jamma era games. It turns out that this business is supported by a local operator who goes by the title of Candyman and the Wacko machine is the same one we had at the Seattle show this past June. Despite the slow start my weekend was looking pretty good...
Saturday morning we get up and go to Portland's Saturday Market, a weekly outdoor flea market esque event. While there we find tons of crap but I did find a guy who creates hand carved signs for a reasonable amount of money. I am strongly considering a large sign for either my arcade or the local collector club. Next stop, Ground Kontrol.
I have heard tons of good things about GK but I never visited until this weekend. The ambiance was great and there was a great mix of games. However, one thing I didn't like was the number of multi-cabs. Many of the Jamma cabs were set up with four or more games (assumably using Clay's kits). However, my overall experience there was great. I got to play a three player Rampart for the first time in four years. This is a definate must have for my personal arcade…
Saturday night Brick Top was having a party at his home so my wife and I decided to stop in. He has a great collection with a very well set up basement/gameroom. I hope to one day have a space as useable as his, currently my games are lined up in a very utilitarian fashion, something more inviting like his gameroom would be cooler in my opinion. Jordan was a great host and my wife and I had a great time at his place. Thanks again Jordan.
Finally Sunday rolls around. I was scheduled to meet another KLOVer at his warehouse and pick up two games being stored there. When I arrived at the warehouse I was amazed by what I saw. It was very much like the standard operator's warehouse, only the games were better grouped and there were many classics and even a few EMs to see. I wandered around, found a few pieces that I am interested in, and had a long conversation with the owner of the warehouse (oregonarcade) and the other KLOVer (Charger).
The fun had to end at some point, so I headed back home. Nothing of significance to report on the return leg. Also, no pics so it likely didn't happen.
