My Top "Want List" Cabinet - Acquired. (Pic Heavy)

Today marked the arrival of my long-awaited Neo Geo MVS-2 Mini. As some of you know, I've been looking for one of these (publicly) for about six months. Have wanted one for years, but really stepped up the search in the last few months.

None were available locally, found a few scattered throughout the country. Then one popped up on eBay. After a few days of e-mails back and forth and a lengthy conversation with the seller, I pulled the trigger. It was shipped in from a far-away peninsula (one that is far warmer than the climate here in PA, that's for sure). NAVL (via Precision-NAL) kicked ass throughout the entire shipping process.

First, thanks to everyone who helped me in this quest. There are a few people on the forum here that were offering up their games (you know who you are), and for that I am eternally grateful. There were also a number of people bugging their friends to sell theirs, and notifying me of sightings. Thanks to you guys, too. All of the crap that happens from time-to-time aside, this community is awesome.

On to the pictures... First, some unwrapping shots:

Now for the good stuff!!!

Next to his big brother. This will be the last time they are together for a while. Big MVS-2 is in the garage for the time being, Mini is going to live in the house.

CRAZY! I never even knew those existed. The ONLY dedicated mini 2-slots that I ever saw were the ones with the walnut wood paneled sides. They WERE sold that way officially as the dedicated 2-slot, and I have seen a number of those (I'm pretty sure that they also had chrome t-molding on them as well), but never saw one of these. Very cool!

Those are commonly called Neo Geo Gold cabinets, or "Goldies". I have two of those, both are in sad shape, but I will bring them back to life!!!

Here's the thread regarding one of the ones I picked up (with pics)...

They are awesome little cabinets, small but still run 19" monitors (the monitor is PACKED in there, hardly any extra space in any direction). The CPO's are *IMPOSSIBLE* to find. I lucked into one on eBay, seller was a moron and it took 3 months to show up. Wasn't packed well, but luckily stayed intact. I'm thinking of getting one made from the artwork at NeoGeoMVS.com via GameOnGrafix to see if I like it. Unfortunately the artwork appears to be down right now (looks like the site is being redesigned).

That machine is in beautiful shape. Congratulations!

I love the NEO GEO system and would especially like to get one of those minis. My only question is this: Do you have to sit in a chair while playing it? It looks so small that standing would be a little difficult. :p

My wife is 5' 2" and the marquee is below (or right around) her eye level. She was standing at it asking me how the hell people could play it. LOL

As far as I'm concerned, it's a sit-down game. :)

Tell us the truth...you found a laundromat with a big enough dryer to shrink that puppy down!

Congrats!! I'll have to stop up some time.

I just checked, and I have that www.neogeomvs.com pdf. PM me if you want a copy - it's too big to attach to a message. Unfortunately, given that it's a bitmap in a PDF, I think you'll need to trace it before you try to have it made (or get the Game On Grafix guys to do it). If you do have one made, let us know how it turns out - I've got one of these cabs as well, and mine could certainly use a new CPO.

I have them all saved on a PC somewhere, too. I'll PM you if I can't find them. I think the GameOnGrafix guys can do them from a raster file (not traced), but I haven't contacted them about it.

There is another member on the forum who I know has a reproduction Neo Geo Mini control panel overlay, I've seen it in-person and it looks pretty good even though it's not printed on plexi/Lexan like the originals, it's just a vinyl print decal (that has the polycarbonate vinyl textured overlay). For the red inserts, he cut the area where the LED displays are out of the vinyl overlay and then used the automobile tail-light tape (in red) to create the appearance of a translucent red window. It's fairly convincing. He didn't use Lexan over top, but I think if you did, it would look even better compared to the original. I'll PM him and see if he can post some pics.

Now, on to the Goldie cabinets. Reproduction CPOs will never look perfect, as the original had a glitter/gold fleck to the paint they silkscreened on the originals. A printed reproduction won't have these identical properties because they are emulating the paint with ink. To get the same look, someone would have to get screens cut, etc. The NeoGeoMVS.com artwork used a cool method of "simulating" the glitter effect of the Goldie CPO, it almost looked like gold leaf or crackle paint, but would (naturally) be printable via standard processes. I am fully planning on getting one printed up once I get working on my Goldie projects, and will naturally share pictures here on the forum.
