I was dropping off some games. Had 4 large cabinets on a shortbed truck so I had to load the last 2 at the same time on the liftgate. So I pulled the crusin world and crusin exotica on and lowered them.

So I was raising the lift back up and 1 of the cables broke.. If it was a few minutes earlier I think I might have had the 2 crusins on me...

My tommylift is about 12 years old(Its on its 3rd truck). It maybe had 750-1000 lifts. I would have guessed the hydraulics would have failed first.. The cable broke inside the access compartment. I would suggest you check your cables..

Next up, find someone to fix my tommylift...

YIKES!
glad it didn't squash you!

A reminder to us all to not skip the periodic maintenance/checks tooo I suppose.

cheers

That lift is probably only rated at 900lbs... The cable is the most common thing to fail on these. The pump rarely fails in my experiences it is always the cable or the piston. Any fleet service type shop will be able to fix it with no problems.

We had three Tommy Lifts on our trucks at the operator I worked for. We'd have the cables replaced every 3 years for safety and have the pulleys greased. A local industrial hydraulics company services liftgates and makes the cables.

We had one time where the Phillips head screw-in relief plug on the hydraulic resevoir blew a hole in it and spewed out hydraulic fluid every time you ran the gate. The relief plug was only a ten dollar part and the local company stocked it.

thanks for the info. I will contact a hydraulics place.

There is a place in SJ called mission valley ford. They sell, service and rent commercial trucks. I was also going to give them a call.

Find a Tommy Lift service dealer near you:

I called a hydraulics place and they referred me to a local dealer that installs lifts and such called specaility trucks(I had been there before to buy adapter mounting plates for my tommy about 5 years ago). They are ordering the parts to fix it. Thanks for the help guys.

just to post a follow up, I got my trck back yesterday. The repair to replace the cables, the grease fittings and service it, it was $321. $95 in parts. I took it to specialty truck parts in san jose. I was happy with the service.

Not like the a-holes at dodge. Took the truck in to have them look at the seat contols. They say its $950 for a new seat assembly. I am going to tear it apart. I think it has a bad motor. It goes forward and back. Just lost up and down control.

They also said the air filter was clogged. I replaced it 2 months ago. They pulled out a dirty orange top fram filter. Mine was grey top. Never going back to them. If I could prove it I would take them to court..
