Well i turned my star trek on and heard a hiss, so i immediately turned it off.. Looked everything over and didnt really see anyhting burnt or anything. So the only thing i could do is try to turn it on again and see whats up.. As soon as i turned it on, one of those REALLy big transistors thats on 1 of those little cards that plug into the chassis smoked and burt, also 2 fuses are smoked on the board... the tranisitor is cracked in half, there was alot of smoke. my room still smells of it and it happened over 2 hrs ago... There was a small flame but it went out by itself quick!

anyways i have a backup go8 that i installed in my game and everything is back to normal..

just wanted to say that the legend is lives, just it wasnt an inferno!!!

now i need to get my Go8 repaired!!

When I had the game, the other little board smoked the resistor. Now the other one went. Dam. There is a little board mounted to the HV cage, check the traces on that
board, because thats where the problem I had with that monitor was, in the traces, and making sure those copper pieces are separated. This is what caused the fuses to blow on me.

Pretty much my worst nightmare right there.

Fortunately my game is too screwed up from other things to catch on fire. :)

i thought i read somewhere chad isn't repairing g08's anymore? I could be wrong. I got to see a g08 catch fire this past saturday lol that is thier normal operating state, isn't it?

Did you really? Story, story! We want the story!

my and my friend John went over to a collectors house, his names tony from coinopspace. I was there to sell him my spaceduel and trade my spyhunter (got a nice comet pinball for it) and John was there to repair G08's, Tony has two captains chairs, both playing blind. John goes through 6 G08's (they'd all been on fire at some point) and starts piecing together the best matched components for a rebuild.

after going completely though them, he hauls one upstairs to test. It's got red green and blue dots on the screen, not getting deflection. After checking a few things, he decides to change out one of the smaller boards. We fire it back up and BANG! it blows something on the small board, and there's smoke and then a flash of fire of the deflection board lol

he packed up all his tools, and enough parts to attempt to repair 2 or 3 monitors back at his shop.

Did it start making that Star Trek "Red Alert" siren from the show?

Scotty: "Captain! I don't how much more the monitor's Dilithium crystals can take, she's gonna blow!"

SELF DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIATED! 5 minutes until self destruct!

It probably started out with a shorted/failed transistor on the heat sink assembly.

This is not too bad of a repair, but the transistors are maybe $8 each when I last looked. I think someone has put together a list of cheaper replacements, but I've always used the 2N6259's when available.

I can look at this if you'd like.

Geesh! That is quite a story.

I've had a number of people tell me that the G08's catching on fire is exaggerated and while it does happen it's not that common an event.

Guess they were wrong?

That's one of my biggest fears as well. I don't have an old sega vector, but I still never like to leave my games on unattended.
