What is the difference between a DS and a DSi. His friends have the DS...can he race against them in Mario Kart with a DSi?

Camera or no camera is the option, DS should be fine for him!

DSi has a camera were the DS does not. Also the DSi screens are slightly larger than the DS. Some of the photo altering program in the DSi is kinda fun to play with. The DS & DSi can network play / share play with eachother. They don't have to be the same

He's going to be 9. Not sure he needs a camera yet. Does the regular DS play music?

Good question. i forgot the DSi has a slot for SD memory cards where you can load multimedia to and the DS does not. But you can get something like a Super Card or R4 to store multimedia files and play them on the DS. The cool thing is also you can download the DS roms and play them as if you bought the game.

You have to buy the MP3 player to get the original DS to play music. Might not be easy to come by at this point and I have read it's not impressive.

The other main difference in my mind not mentioned here (besides fifty bucks) is that the DS has a slot for GBA games. The DSi lost that capability, is slimmer, and can download games for a price.

Their is supposed to be another DS released before the year ends. It is supposed to have a super large screen. Large for a portable that is. Kinda dumb if you ask me.

I think I'll try to find a DS Lite for him. He wants green, but I can't find a green one online. Does Wal usually stock all the colors?

I believe the green DS Lite came bundled with Personal Trainer: Cooking. If that is the case, Wal Mart is indeed your best bet. They always carry bundles like that.

Well, there are some good sites out there like DecalGirl.com that sell heavy duty DS Lite "skins" for about 9.99 a piece. Some of my friends have used them before, they attest they are high quality and their DSes are indeed quite snazzy. Although their solid green skin is about the same shade as the factory green, they have some cool more macho green designs on there, several camoflage designs for instance.

My son used to have a DS, these little wonder machines are a lot of fun.
To bad his DS got in trouble with my sons temper and the DS is no more:(
That was a year ago and hope he learned, I'll get him a DSi for Xmass.

4" screen, and yeah, it seems silly, especially with the extra 30 bucks or so it's running, maybe more. It's apparently being targeted towards older folks who just play puzzle games and don't have great eyesight.

I love my DS Lite, and outside of the camera, sd slot for music and the very rare game that will be dsi only (i think all of 2 have been announced and the dsi has been out for a few months), there isn't a lot he won't be able to do w/ the ds lite. The GBA slot on the ds lite is nice too. If music is wanted, this http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.15613 (it'll take a bit to get to you, they're shipping from asia) and a decently fast (I run a class 6) micro sd card will do the job. Load the mp3s onto the micro sd card, put the dstt in like a normal ds game and you're golden. I have one, I use it a lot, works great with homebrew (I've got a couple of the lucasarts adventure games on it, genesis emulator, quasi-mame, some other stuff) roms or whatever else you want. Same performance as you'll get out of the other flash carts out there that run 50 bucks a pop and I know for certain that site only sells legit ones (there were some issues with counterfeit flash carts bricking ds units). Though homebrew/etc is probably more than he's gonna want to do with it. :)
