My SNK Neo 50 Restoration project

Progress Updates

Got my MV-4F system mobo from jon713 today. Thank You! Anyways I seen a few pictures or owners decide to take this extra precaution to protect the steel cage while also giving it a little edge and/or style. So I unmounted it and starting priming it with Rust-oleum at around 4 pm and after like 3 coats......sanding between 2nd and 3rd. I applied a Blue Gloss enamel, woulda preferred a matte, but they didn't have any matte blue....oh well. Got 2 coats of blue before I decided to call it for a night for painting, I'll let it dry for 24 hours, Sand out a little clump of paint on the lower left edge and apply 2 more coats and everything should be good.

Now the board is working, but I may need to work on the battery portion. Battery had obviously leaked before, jon713 said it was a unworking but he got it up and running, but the prongs that held the battery are all torn up. Some busted resistors and diodes in the battery area of the board probably from cleanup, but if I'm correct that battery is only used for book keeping.........correct me if I'm wrong.

The battery is used for the book keeping and saving game settings/high scores IIRC. The mobo will work fine without the battery, you will just loose those features. If it appears to be corroded at all, the battery should be removed and the area cleaned with a light mix of baking soda and water on a toothbrush.

Hey man the blue is looking good. When I got my 4 slot is was in rough shape too, took out the battery and just used it as is, dont care much about saving my scores. The mobo will work perfectly without the battery, so your good.

Here are some good battery replacement tuts just in case:

wow, love it

man you are lucky that you got one of these, i always wanted something like this, all i got are 33inch showcase cabs x4...please continue with your restoring, i really want to see how it ends out, should be awesome and fun too!

quick question's...

is there some board that converted the arcade signal to that TV? or how does this one work?

will you plan on making a bench or something like/near the original?

It appears to have a converter, some board on the outer side of the tv component box. I wouldn't know 100% because this is my first one.

The bench may be a possible future project, seeing how its made of custom molded ABS and some metal shielding it could be a difficult.

Don't worry I'll be sure to keep my thread updated with progressions of the cabinet's restoration!

Be sure to include a backed up picture of the entire thing at some point. I didn't realize you didn't have the bench. :p That would be tough to replicate if it is in bad shape.

Ya sadly no Bench came with it. Not by choice, I wasn't completely disheartened though, from a non-authenticty point I just like the idea of getting a cabinet like that. But I could see the reason getting down to restore it you might want a matching set.

Anyways my biggest concern is getting it a 100% functional and playable, which should be easy from a stand point because I'm nearly finished with everything wiring and electrical. But my other concern is my painting skills........lol ok went to sand down some paint clumps on that paint job from yesterday.....didn't do a fine sanding.....applied 2 coats of the enamel again and it looks to have scratches now from the sand paper because the paint didn't smooth it out really. So i gotta let it dry again, do a finer sanding and then give it maybe 2 more coats. I always seem to do this, but it really started with the primer, i was in a cramped spot on my porch and i got too close and the paint clumped up in a corner......i thought i could buff that out later PROPERLY but didn't because i was talking to a friend. Distractions......

I'm also going to purchase one game from an Ebay seller, hes got a Metal Slug 3 going for $50 and free shipping, plus he lives in Texas so.....should be reasonably fast. He has plenty of pictures inside and outside the cartridge to be assured its not a Bootleg. It's that or buy one of my small favorites League Bowling for about the same price after shipping....and that one is in Europe so that will take more than a week most likely.

*Edit
I'm not buying that Metal Slug 3 lol, it was bid only, sware I saw Buy it Now......

Sorry lol, this one is on back burner for a bit. I have to have easier access to it in order to do work. Plus my work schedule is demanding along side my friend's schedules.

The biggest pain like I said is going to be the CP, but I think painting and etc will come and go easily. I've already pretty much handled anything to do with the wiring. Guess I should order some buttons and cleanup up those old Zippys..............
