My side art & marquee have met a Gorfian doom...

Seriously, how cheap is this stuff? A little cleaner and my side art turned white. The marquee got a bath (literally, it was pretty nasty), and the red on the Gorf logo flaked off, along with small areas of purple.

Side art dosent bother me so much, except all my rags are blue and useless now. I tried touching up the marquee, but I'm thinking its time for a new one. Just cant believe the artwork is this bad.

So, what cleaner did you use on your 30 year old artwork? I'm thinking you should not become an archivist at a museum.

Glad I saw this. Just got a dusty Gorf the other day and didn't get around to cleaning it yet. Looks like I will have to be very careful...

Heh, I think after wiping a small section and seeing the sideart turn white, I would have stopped, rather than finishing that side off and proceeding to do the same to the other side :p .

I use awesome orange, just the cheap stuff you get at Dollar Tree or Wal-Mart. I had a similar experience with our Megatouch, but nowhere near as bad. Once I noticed the blue was coming off I just said fuck it, I'm not leaving one side a "glob" of blue & white, and I'm not leaving the other side dirty. It really dosent bother me, the side art still looks ok, its just white now. The marquee is a cheap and easy replacement.

Maybe I'm using the wrong cleaner, but unless I'm using paint thinner, theres no reason this should happen, thats my rant.

Like a previous poster, the screen printing was 30 years old on a machine that was expected to last like 1/6th of that time. lol I can understand a little disappointment, but it's old junk. What can we expect of ink?

Be extra careful with old artwork. I never use a strong cleaner on the art, except I've found that you can somehow use Goof Off (yes, the nasty/stinky/strong stuff) and wipe scuffs and dirt right off of Atari art, yet it won't take the color off. Don't blame me if you have different results, but I've found Centipede, Bzone, Dig Dug, etc.. indestructible. Other types of art though.. can be very delicate.

I thought this had Magic Eraser written all over it! Guess not! That really sucks man!:(

And never, *ever*, immerse a glass marquee or bezel in water!!!

(Although the Gorf marquee is plastic, which is usually okay. I don't know what happened there.)

I think gorf art should only be cleaned with soap and water. Sadly inkjet repros are probably better quality than the original art.

I've had 2 Gorf cabinets and I don't know what I cleaned them with but I never had a problem like that. The "Orange" cleaners are usually organic based and I am not suprised that they would react badly to ink. I don't think that I used anything more powerful than normal Windex or mild soapy water.

Usually, cleaners, cleaning agents, etc. from the dollar store are poor quality or contain chemicals that shouldn't be in there. Not saying that this was the problem, but I never trust dollar store stuff.

For example, the generic/cheap drain uncloggers they sell contain hydrochloric acid. Sure it will unclog your drain, but it will also eat a hole in your pipes!
