I started putting my Scramble cabinet back together.

When I got it, someone did a terrible job converting it into a Mr. Do! I decided it needed to be a Scramble again. This is my first arcade restoration and I want to show you guys what I've done so far.

Here it is when I got it...

and here it is now...

I stripped the cabinet down and sanded it to get the nasty green paint off. I realized there was a lot of water damage on the bottom of the cabinet, so I had to rip off 6 inches from the bottom of each side. I replaced it with wood, bondoed the seams and bondoed the broken corners. Then I painted... and painted... and painted... and painted.

While I painted, I sent off the marquee brackets and coin door to a local powder coat place....

and that's where I'm at.

To do:

T-Molding
Install new wiring harness
side art
Fabricate a back cover
Coin door sticker
Coin return parts

I got a guy who is going to print a vinyl sticker for the back of a new backglass. I've redrawn the art in vector format, so he'll make it and I'll see how it looks. The backglaass now is flaking pretty badly

I'm pretty proud of it. I would do some things differently next time, but I think this is pretty good for my first restore.

nice! I always had a soft spot for scramble. Never was good at it and while it is on my 60-in-1, the sound blows pretty bad. Keep posting pics as you finish it out.

looks great, did you spray it or roll it?

I rolled it.

Not sure I would do that again though, but that's mostly my fault. At first, I used cheap ass wal-mart rollers and they shed all over the wet paint. It seriously looked like I shaved my dog and threw it in the wet paint. I was so pissed. I had to sand off the first layer I painted.

After that it went OK. It was pretty time consuming though. Next time I'll try a sprayer and see if I do any better.

A foam roller will do a super job. Looking good and keeping it real!!!!

Awesome! I for one am a BIG scramble fan, I even have a picture of me, at 11 years old, with a gold medal high score that I won at an arcade in Reno, NV, LOL.

It's kind of rare to find an original Scramble cabinet now days from what I can tell, perhaps the 60-1 have killed them? Of course a 60-1 IN an original Scramble cabinet would be golden...

Sold a couple PCB's so I ordered new T-Molding last night.

Should have enough left over to order the stencils soon...

I popped in the PCB last night just to see how she looks with the marquee lit and the game showing through the bezel.

So awesome.

Welp...

Went ahead and got the stencils from Thisoldgame...

click for big.

I'm very pleased with the results... mostly. The stencils were awesome (Thanks Rich) but on the first side I decided to try latex and a foam roller for the stencil art since I had the colors on hand. Big mistake. Peeled like an onion when I removed the templates. It doesn't look too bad. I am fixing it by hand and it will be just fine.

The second side (pictured) I used spray paint. MUCH better results. There's only a few minor spots where the paint peeled when I removed the stencils, but those are already fixed.

Just a minor control panel rewire, and I think she's ready for my gameroom!

Hey great job!!
any objections to using these pics on my site??

on a side note its always best to use a paint thats going to stick to your base coat
you cant always mix and match paint types since some paints stick better than others

Sure thing! I can take a better photo... I've since fixed some of the paint that peeled off (like the yellow spot on the orange in the middle)

But you can use these if you like.

Rich,

So if your base is oil then you should use oil when you stencil? Just curious, because I plan on doing my BurgerTime this summer. What's your opinion on rolling versus spraying? Are both results acceptable?
