My ongoing DK restoration project - Thanks to gutsman004

Can someone tell me what that black cardboard shroud is called that goes around the monitor? Bezel, shroud, ???

Thanks!

Monitor Shroud. Probably easiest to create one using black poster board.

Now that's a cool resto thread! He has the benefit of a mostly intact shroud. I do not. So my biggest issue is getting the monitor hole done right. But I guess as cheap as poster board is, I can buy a few sheets and give it a go. Thanks!

Yup, he failed at the end in the KLOVer's eyes with emulation but from the outside it looks awesome. ;-)

haha! I didn't notice it was emulated. Just quickly scrolled through to find the shroud. I'll try to never disappoint the KLOV cult :D

Just baby steps, but I did get the Power Supply swapped out which is nothing, but took lots of time and cleaned up the individual wires that all were mostly coated with a muddy looking film. And cleaned off some glue and old stickers that were pretty much worthless:

I just ordered a new instruction sticker and Gutsman says he has the Insert Coin sticker for me.

Just saw your question, I did document most of my project here:

Ah, HELL Yeah! That turned out great!!! Good job!

The next auction is in December, you need to finish this one so you can buy another one. :D

So far so good!

Right on!!! ;) Thanks!

Looking good Rick! This DK will be working in no time! :D

Thanks Greg! Not going to get in a huge hurry, especially on the cosmetic part of it.

I have installed a working ISO transformer and a power supply now. I plugged it in and flipped the switch. I hear quiet buzzing but nothing from the monitor or sound. I am looking around and notice a burning smell. It is coming from the back side of the monitor area. The game board, PS, and iso transformer do not smell. Positive it's coming from the monitor area.

What's next? [scratches bald head] Find another monitor?

I would think you would be able to play blind if the monitor was the only issue.
Finding out if your pcb boards work would be key.
I had bad boards in my Tron and because I could hear it and the monitor was scrambled I thought it was the monitor.
Then I got my boards fixed and the monitor worked great with a little tuning.

Mikesarcade repairs boards, or for around the same price you can pick up a working DK Jr board.
Then once you have it working test your DK board.
Then you can get the DK Jr board upgraded to double DK and play both.
And sell your DK board to help pay for your investment.

Two games one cab!

No sound whatsoever. But I was actually thinking the speakers were powered off of the monitor assembly. Isn't that were the amp is?

Is there a way to temporary a computer montior (cheaply) just to check to see if the board is working?

I like your idea though as long as running DK AND Dk Jr is not sacrilegious or any thing ;) Where do I go about getting a board that does both, or is this a hack of sorts that I have to do? BTW, like the new avatar!

Not sure about the sound amp, I'm new to nintendo and haven't yet dug into my non-working kong.

Here is info on repair:

Here's info on the Double Donkey Kong mod for DK Jr. Boards.
http://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?action=url&page=prod/ddk/ddk.html

And it is not considered sacrilegious, allot of guys do it.

Keep an eye on the KLOV for sale thread DK Jr boards come up allot usually about $80.

Thank ya sir!

I have to go back to where I found the smell though. I'm fairly certain it's the monitor assembly. But I think I'll get the double-DK mod anyways. That's pretty cool! Thanks for the info on that!

The double DK mod kills the sound on Donkey Kong (IMO). It's just not right running through the DK Jr. board. It's a little more of a pain to do this, but you can mount both a DK and a DK Jr. board in your game and use of the Dokert/Timberterror harnesses with an edge connector and then you can switch games with only one swap of a connector. That way, everything stays authentic. Plus, if you are patient, you can get a DK Jr. board for pretty cheap. I got mine for $50 on eBay.

You may want to try and post a specific thread in the monitor section, just to focus on your monitor problems. If you put a specific thread title, you may get more feedback.

Then just copy and paste the crossover thread here. To keep this thread complete.

Interesting did not know about that.

Yeah, I found this when looking around on the link smokinfish sent me:

It is significant enough. I'll have to consider your option. Thanks!
