I am still trying to figure out what the metal thing is that the power cord connects to that the isolation transformer sits on.

That would be your "power distribution box" basically it has some fuses in it and it splits the power to go to the isolation transformer and also the switching power supply.

I don't mean to turn this into a repair forum but I would like to replace the power cable. Is there documentation on how to open this up and switch it out?

replacing the cord is super easy, 6 screws hold down the power brick (power dist. box), personally i recommend pulling it from the machine by disconnecting the grounds and wire harness. once out, there is only 1 wire soldered in (white) while black and green have .187 quick disconnects.

remove the black and green disconnect, and desolder the white. use a pair of channel locks to remove the fatigue grommet from the metal box, run the new cord through the hole solder the white wire, connect the black and green, use the channel locks to squeeze the grommet back in. triple check everything and reinstall.

no prob at all, the grommet can be a huge pain just be patient and it should go in without to much trouble. in the picture i still have the white wire soldered to the terminal (that was removed), glad to see someone else changing out their power wire(s). It's cheap insurance and fairly easy, gives you a chance to clean up under the iso brick.

(funny 3 out of 7 midway iso's i've done have been missing one of the screws that hold in the line filter).
