This is a BRILLIANT idea if I may say so myself.

Previously I've been using a heat gun, knifes, putty knifes, wirewheels, sanding discs (loads of them) and combo's of these and it was ALWAYS a struggle.

I had noticed that after my friend welded the 4 studs for the original Pac Man joystick on the CP, the CPO had become loose because of the heat of the welding.
So.....I figured, let's try to heat the CP up VERY hot and see what happens.

It worked out GREAT. In the video you see I can only pull small parts, but this is because it was on an inside bend. The other bigger sides went much smoother. The very big plus is that there is NO glue residue.

Of course you need to be careful, you need an oven-glove to hold the CP and turn on the "air-sucker" to get rid of possible bad fumes, but otherwise, I love this method !

Looks dangerous! :)
I wonder if a heat gun from behind (to heat the metal and then the cpo indirectly) would have the same affect...

cheers

My wife handled the camera ! :)

Doesn't smell at all UNLESS you burn a piece of the overlay, so try to prevent that. As mentioned, turn on the "air sucker" above the fire (how do you call these things ?)

Dangerous ? Well yes, you have to be careful.

If I would have a spare oven I would use that.

Tailgating

Put some aluminum foil on your propane grill to protect the rack and you can lay the cpo down while you peel. I've used that one for curing high temp paint on regular auto parts.
Another outdoor alternative would be a coleman stove, same basic principle as his oven stovetop.

I'm just assuming they grill in the Netherlands.......

Thanks for the tip Level42, perfect timing right before I strip some frogger cpos. :)

bingo. foil on a grill, fire it up, put cp on and an hour later, a light once over with a wire brush and you have a sparkly control panel...

not such great results with wood i'd imagine :-0

I do the oven method 500 degress for 75 seconds and the cpo's peel right off

Andrew

I tried this yesterday and it works. The smell last for all of 5 minutes if you ventilate properly.

I had my CP stripped and ready for new art in under 15 minutes....oven procedure included.

It boggles my mind how this has been brought up many times and every time there are a bunch of people who cry "it will smell" and then say "wouldn't a heat gun or a propane torch be better?" This really works and there is little or no smell unless you leave the panel in too long and burn the cpo. As for the propane torch or any other method for that matter, they may work but I promise they take anywhere from 2 to 10 times longer. This is hands down the best method yet still the majority of people resist it and would rather take an hour or more to remove a cpo and clean a cp rather than the 15-20 mins it takes with this method.

I've done this too, and it works great
Doesn't that stink up the place? I know if I screwed up the oven or left a burning plastic smell doing this it would be a bad thing

Yes it does stink up the place.
So I don't get to do it too often, lol.

I have used solar power to strip the CPO. Here in Georgia, the summers are brutal. Just leave the CP out in the sun for 10min or 30min, whatever, then it will peel right off.

It only smells if you leave it in too long. You should only be heating the metal panel not melting the cpo. The heated panel softens the adhesive which lets it come off easily. The cpo should not melt, brown bubble ect. If it does any of these you are leaving it in too long.
