My new fastest KO time: Dragon Chan (Super Punch-Out)

Twin Galaxies settings (the clock runs faster than on the easiest setting, resulting in slower KO times relative to the real-world amount of time spent).

• Bear Hugger - 0' 21" 24
• Dragon Chan - 0' 24" 59
• Vodka Drunkenski - 0' 39" 84
• Great Tiger - 0' 52" 60
• Super Macho Man - 1' 08" 76

I shaved about a half second off my old fastest time, which had been my fastest time for a few years. I'd like to get Super Macho Man to under a minute, but I'm not sure if that is even possible.

Getting Great Tiger in under a minute seems to be next to impossible; I've only done it twice. I wish the "Venice Beach version" of Super Punch-Out would surface; I used to be able to KO Great Tiger in about 35 seconds on that version when I was a kid in the '80s.

I was trying for a new personal best high score tonight (current personal best = 1,264,300 points) but this was not to be. I was at about 900,000 points when Super Macho Man decided that he'd had just about enough of my foolishness for one night.

Those are some quick times, I love that SPO added the KO times for the first round of fighters. Ive beat Dragon Chan under 30 seconds once, cant seem to do it again. Ive beat Great Tiger under a minute a hand full of times, but never low 50's and for some reason cant get my Drunkenski times under 45 seconds anymore. Ive done a 40 and a bunch of 41 second KOs months ago.

But do you know how accurate the MAME version is? I finally beat the 3rd SMM a few days ago and my new high is just over 550,000. Still having a little trouble beating Dragon Chan consistantly, once I get the KO meter up he turns into a bitch.

But do you know how accurate the MAME version is?

The main problem with the MAME version is the audio lag, most noticeable on your character's punch sound effects (slight delay between when you see your punch connect and when you hear it connect). That happens in MAME for both PO and SPO. It also has the wrong sound effect for when Dragon Chan kicks. It should be a "whoosh" sound, but instead it has some other sound in there. Patterns are slightly different sometimes.

Do you have the dipswitches in MAME set to Twin Galaxies settings? "Difficulty" and "Time" should both be set to "1", like this:

By default, those are both set to "0" in MAME, which is the easiest difficulty and the slowest moving clock (allowing for the fastest KO times).

Yea I made sure I set them right. Its just that I heard the game was not emulated correctly, but its good to know most the problems are with the sound.

But I really need to find a real SPO cause playing with a keyboard is lame.

Maybe that version was only used in dedicated SPO cabs :50: . Sorry, I had to... but congrats on your time. I'm personally lucky to even beat Vodka Drunkenski when I play.

Sometimes an opponent will do something a little different than he would do on the real hardware, but for the most part the emulation is pretty accurate in terms of gameplay. You should be able to jump onto an SPO arcade machine and equal or better your MAME score immediately without any relearning phase, assuming you don't get distracted by the properly sync'd punch sound effects on the real hardware.

That would be something, huh?

I really want that version of SPO, since that was the version I played as a kid in '87/'88. It was also the only version I'd ever played, because I never came across an SPO machine anywhere else until I bought one nearly 20 years later (though I played on several different PO machines over the years, which were far more common).

So SPO wasn't a very common game to begin with, and apparently the "Venice Beach version" was rare as hen's teeth.

Those are some pretty awesome times! Totally blow my times out of the water. What is the "venice beach version"?

Here's a copy and paste from an old post where I described it:

The version of SPO that I refer to as the "Venice Beach" version, is the machine I played as a kid in '87/'88 down at the local general store. There were 3 differences that I remember, compared to the SPO machine I own now (which is the same as the one in MAME).

1. When Great Tiger stepped back at the 30 second mark for his special move, and you knocked him down with a head or gut punch as he stepped forward; when he got back up, you could land a single punch to the gut and he would go down again, and stay down (assuming he hadn't hit you yet). This resulted in a KO time of about 36 seconds. This doesn't work on the more common version of SPO. He takes the punch without going down.

2. On Super Macho Man's introduction screen, his location was given as "Venice Beach, CA". On the more common version, it is given as simply "USA". I always thought the Venice Beach location was particularly fitting, because SMM is supposed to be a bodybuilder, and Venice Beach is a famous hangout for bodybuilders (it is also known as "Muscle Beach").

3. The order of the fighters was slightly different at one point. In the more common version, after you beat the 2nd SMM, it goes to the 3rd Dragon Chan, skipping what should have been the 3rd Bear Hugger, then Bear Hugger is back after the 3rd SMM, and remains in the lineup indefinitely after that.

In the Venice Beach version, Bear Hugger was never skipped. After you beat the 2nd SMM, you went to the 3rd Bear Hugger. This stands out in my mind because the 3rd Bear Hugger has a surprise for you, and the first time someone gets to him, they usually get nailed with the surprise in the first couple seconds and don't get up. Since I never beat the 3rd SMM as a kid, I never would have seen the 3rd Bear Hugger if that machine had skipped him like the more common version does. However, he was there, because the first time I beat the 2nd SMM (beating my rival's score in the process, making it particularly memorable), the 3rd Bear Hugger dropped me instantly with his "surprise" and the game was over just like that.

Common SPO:

1st Cycle:

1. 1st CBH
2. 1st DC
3. 1st VD
4. 1st GT
5. 1st SMM

2nd Cycle:

1. 2nd CBH
2. 2nd DC
3. 2nd VD
4. 2nd GT
5. 2nd SMM

3rd Cycle:

1. 3rd DC
2. 3rd VD
3. 3rd SMM

4th Cycle:

1. 3rd CBH
2. 4th DC
3. 4th VD
4. 4th SMM

Venice Beach Version:

1st Cycle = Same

2nd Cycle = Same

3rd Cycle:

1. 3rd CBH
2. 3rd DC
3. 3rd VD
4. 3rd SMM

The 3rd Canadian Bear Hugger has the same style (surprise attack at the beginning of the fight) in both versions, only his placement in the lineup is different.

Note that the "Venice Beach version" wasn't doing anything new by giving a specific location for a fighter (rather than just the country). In the original PO, the only fighter that didn't have a specific location given was Piston Hurricane:

Glass Joe - Paris, France
Piston Hurricane - Cuba
Bald Bull - Istanbul, Turkey
Kid Quick - Brooklyn, N.Y.
Pizza Pasta - Napoli, Italy
Mr. Sandman - Philadelphia, PA

Ahh neat. I'll have to check mine when I get home tonite. Never really noticed if is says CA or Venice Beach.

I only saw one SPO BITD and it was the VB version. It was at Malibu Grand Prix in City of Industry, Ca. I also remember seeing the faster Great Tiger times you mentioned.
I'm also pretty certain the BH times were under 20 sec. I could be wrong as I was only about 13 when I saw the machine. And I only saw it a couple times before it was gone.

I can get under 20 seconds on Bear Hugger on the default "0" dipswitch setting for the time; 17 or 18 seconds if I remember right. There may be a way to do it on the Twin Galaxies time setting ("1"), but if there is, I haven't discovered it yet.

As for Great Tiger, my fastest time on the "0" setting is in the 49 second range. I truly believe it is impossible to get in the low to mid 30 second range except on the Venice Beach version (in which case, it is very easy to do if you know the trick).

Just checked my machine. It just says CA. :( I'm sad now.

"CA"? Do you mean "USA"? Because if it just says "CA" (as in California) that would be another version altogether that I've never heard of.

I know this is an old thread but saw the expert players involved in it so I just had to ask.

2nd SMM. Been there a couple dozen times. 16 spins seems a little abnormal to me. Anyone else ever see this?

Here's the clip.

Also, 3rd DC is making me his bitch everytime. I'm the pitcher, NOT THE CATCHER! Help!

Some awesome times in this thread. I'm decent with the earlier fighters, not so much against Great Tiger or the later Dragon Chans.

BH: 20"90
DC: 38"37
VD: 39"18
GT: 1'11"88
SMM: 1'24"31

I've been playing a ton of SPO lately. I just beat SMM a couple of different times so I was thinking I'm pretty pro at this point.....until I found this thread and was put in my place.

Here are my times & high score:

What an interesting story about the "Venice Beach" version. I'm curious if this was some sort of early ROM swap or something? It seems very strange that it would not have surfaced. I'll have to pay better attention when playing. I know I've knocked down Great Tiger with a single gut punch once or twice right after he'd gotten up from his 2nd knock-down, but I'm guessing this was just because he got up with low energy.

...and that video of 16 spins from SMM#2 is nuts. I still struggle with SMM #1. Strangely his basic hook punch is the thing that gets me most. It's very humbling to play 2nd Bear Hugger and get schooled. I've not been able to beat him yet.

Anyone playing SPO these days?

I'll jump back on it! I gotta figure it out someday/somehow. It's not gonna happen with me NOT playing.

Interesting about the VB version. I suck too badly to get past GT though so I have no idea.
