My new arcade room project

Nice Brad... so when are you having people over?

Actually, I'll be hosting Thanksgiving this year, so the rush is on to get this room in a playable state by then.

My painter has agreed to do the room some time in December, so I'll be ready to host a proper gathering sometime in January, I'm guessing.

Looks like I've got a bit more work ahead of me with this Star Wars cab:

Just a quick update and some video goodness :D

The arcade room got 3 really good workouts this week, with friends over on Wednesday night, hosting Thanksgiving, and again tonight. All in all, things are working great.

A few things that need attention:

  • A few coin mechs are jamming up pretty easily. Needs adjustment.
  • A few coin door bulbs are finicky.
  • Double Dragon needs a new JAMMA connector. The board resets constantly.
  • Arkanoid II also needs a new JAMMA connector.
  • My Aim Trak in my MAME rig took a digger to the concrete floor tonight and nearly cracked the gun housing in half. It's not working. I'll have to pull it apart to see what's wrong.

one of the dynamo cabs has a k7000 that needs c56 or 57 replaced :D

nice job on the floor, when the time comes, i believe i will be stealing that idea. did clear epoxy go on top of it all to hold it all togther or??

You talking about the one with the jailbars? (red bezel)

Both of those CPS2 games need caps on the monitor chassis, but they're acceptable right now, so I'm leaving them.

Yes, the floor has epoxy down first, then a medium broadcast of 4 different colors of UV reflective chips, and then poly on top to lock it all in.

If I had one regret about this process, it would be that my painter was a bit quick to broadcast the UV flakes on the epoxy paint. The paint was a bit wet when he spread them out, and it soaked into some of the flakes, reducing their reflective nature a bit. I think if he'd have waited until the floor had set up a bit more (but still tacky) the result would have been a much brighter floor. But I'm nit picking. It's very cool.

Now that I've had a few parties, it's time to get down to decorating this room. The walls will get painted some time next month. Then I need to find some pictures and goodies to decorate with.

FYI, the change machine is a huge hit. I got more comments on that than I did the games and pins. Little kids got a huge kick out of walking up to it, pushing the coin reject button and getting 4 quarters for their effort. :D Instant gratification. It's my 4 year old daughter's favorite game, the "blue game that you win money."

Just a quick update to this thread - I got a call from my painter last night. He will be coming over on Saturday morning to paint the walls in my arcade. I need to choose a color TODAY. Anyone have any recommendations as to what color to paint my walls?

With the blacklight chips on the floor I would suggest nothing to light on the walls. Satin finish black, charcoal, or chocolate?

Good suggestions - I was thinking along those lines as well. I won't run black lights in the room ALL time time, however. I will use dimmed floor lamps periodically in case the black lights hurt someone's eyes, or just for casual gaming in there by myself.

I was thinking a darker shade of Walmart Blue:

Heh, my painter ran out of paint. The color I chose required 3 coats on each wall, so he's coming back with another gallon on Tuesday afternoon.

Once I get close, I'll post some more shots.

OK, here's my submission....... Since you seem to be proud of your floor work (as you should be), and others also like it, I think you should call the room 'STARWALK', because it is like you are walking on stars glowing in the sky.

I wouldn't call it "The Starwalk Arcade", I think that might be too much- just STARWALK would be appropriate. And a single word would also be easier to do in Neon. :D

When can I collect my prize? (huge grin)

EDIT: my childhood arcade was called GALAXY, and it held that name for years so, a 1-word name will work just fine.

Updates! The paint is done...just waiting for it to dry completely before moving games back against the walls.

A few shots...it's tough to get a good shot now, since the walls are so dark.

Looks great! If I were painting it I probably would have painted the conduit too, just because it must have been a pain to not paint it! :D I guess that is why you hired a painter!

Edit:
Are you painting the ceiling?

I might paint the ceiling, but I think I'll wait until the summer time for that, since I will likely have to spray paint the ceiling tiles to get even coverage. I just can't see doing roller paint in black.

This weekend I'll try and get the games all put back and see how things look.

I asked the painter about whether or not to paint the condiut, and he and I both agreed it was cooler to leave it silver. Sort of adds to the industrial feel, I guess. Most likely I will try to get some sort of waist high bar table and chairs made from reclaimed plumbing pipes to keep the warehouse motif going.
