my multi williams is done!

You're doing it wrong then...

Robotron... dead on.

Joust.... dead on.

Bubbles... dead on.

I don't play much Defender or Stargate so perhaps THOSE are the games you refer to?
Robotron = much better with 4" sticks
Joust = controls and buttons on every other game work fine, but on player 2 in Joust no left or right
Bubbles = Wha...?
Defender & Stargate = WAY off on controls
Other than that, how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

Looks nice Jim, but I (hate to) have to agree with everyone on the loss of the Sinistar sideart... :( (*sniff, sniff*)

and you gotta be REAL anal to be put off by a stick being a little to the left.

A little? Its all the way to the left.

Would you think playing Pole Position with the steering wheel on the left of the CP would be a little weird? I would.

BTW - I only ever played (and owned) a dedicated Bubbles. Having the stick to the left is strange.

Strange... my Joust works fine (P1 and P2).....

Also... my Robotron HAS 4" sticks...

So you're complaining about issues that you created with your decisions? You CHOSE to not take the time to look for 4" sticks... not sure about the control issue... I'm guessing you wired something up wrong.

It is a great product, don't get me wrong. I was just expecting 48 in 1 type playability and it isn't that playable, PERIOD. My expectations were out of line, the 48 in 1 is a bunch of games wirh basically identical joystick and button layout, the multi-Wiulliams is not.

...and I disagree wholeheartedly.

The games all play great IMHO...

If you build an actual ROBOTRON but skimp on the sticks, are you going to bitch about the games playability?

The irony of this argument is that YOU paid for MY Williams Multigame PCB. Thank you! It's one of my favorite cabs!

:D

PS: The 48-in-1 mixes 8 way and 4 way games... try playing some of the Pacs or DK with an 8-way stick... not a very good example of "playability" there bro.

;)

That's okay Jon, there is no penalty for being wrong (again). :)

I have 8 ways in mine and I have had no issues whatsoever. What are you talking about?

You obviously can't play DK or the Pac games with any skill level if you really can't tell a difference playing these two types of games with an 8-way stick.

THAT is what I'm talkin' `bout Willis!

I mean that the controls are just enough off from the originals to make it suck enough that I have only played ~10 games total on it since getting it done... which took almost 2 years. Now if I can just get Robo Jon to sell his Stargate cabaret.

So you are talking about the physical orientation of the controls for the MW? Or are you saying that you think the jrok board is not accurate to game play? I could tell just by looking that the MW cp layout is horrible. When I build mine I'm using a defender cab and building a few different cp's to accommodate different games.

Gameplay is fine, it is mainly the controls. I was a big Defender and Stargate player, wanted this for those probably more than anything.

In my Scramble with the 48 in 1 I have an old school leaf joystick. In Pac Man, Pengo, hell virtually every 4-way game I've owned I've had what? That's right, the exact same old school leaf switch joystick. What am I missing bro?

I guess 1942 and 1943 (or other 8-way games). :p

If you play the 4-ways games with an 8-way, it's easy to get caught in a corner when you mean to go U, D, L, R.

But I agree, Defender/Stargate not so hot on a 4", 8-way wico. Get a Stargate panel and drop it in there.

personally, i haven't played an dedicated defender in a while, but it plays pretty well on the MW setup. i do agree a much shorter stick would be better. makes it easier to hit the reverse button.

i very much prefer the wico leaf sticks over a micro stick, though. very smooth movement, especially on robotron. i do need to get a centering spring for one of them, though.

Congrats on getting it done, Looks nice. The monitor bezel seems 'off' to me, is there plexi over the monitor? Seems like you can see the frame.

Was the other side of the sideart bad? Just wondering. It's your game you can do what you'd like. Seems a shame to cover the original if it was not too bad, especially since it was a Williams stencil.

Enjoy the machine!

:)

Chris

i don't have the plastic shroud that goes under the bezel around the monitor. but as far as the side art, the stencil area was perfect. the black part not so much, had a lot of scrapes and scuffs and whatnot. i did it with the intentions of eventually using rich (thisoldgames) multi williams side art.

Ahhh, okaay. That explains the shroud :)

Thanks for the clarification.

Enjoy it!

I'm doing one too... questions.

I'm converting an old Joust cabinet to a multi-williams, have some questions for you.

How does the button near the left joystick work as a reverse button for Defender / Stargate? Seems like it's too far away?

Did you consider adding a second button on the left side for games like Double Dragon?

I'm thinking a couple of extra buttons would allow me to play most horizontal type games.

not at all. i use my left thumb to hit reverse with my other figures working the joystick. plays pretty well.

I'm thinking a couple of extra buttons would allow me to play most horizontal type games.

not at all. for these reasons :

1. it would not be a multi williams at that point. i have horizontal jamma boards, but this game is dedicated to multi williams for me. if i want to play those boards i'll just get another jamma cab. which i'll probably do once i get a bigger house.

2. the multi williams button layout, regarding player one buttons 1 and 2, is not conducive to playing games, as they are not anywhere near the player one joystick. they're on the opposite side of the control panel. if you want to have a multi williams and multi jamma cab in the same spot, i'd wire up two jamma harnesses, one for the williams, one for the jamma, and have two separate control panels that you could swap out. then switch harnesses and control panels when you want to play each game.

oh, and to update, i moved the monitor up vertically about 1.5 inches in the cab and the picture fits and looks much better...
