My monitor just dies last night! Help! Strong burning smell and a blown fuse.

Its a Street Fighter 2 Big Blue 25". The monitor looked superb and then all of a sudden it just completely dies. No glow in the neck. The 2A slow blow fuse is blown. Whenever it died, there was a strong burning smell for about 25 minutes. My friend who was close by said it made some crackling, sparking noises. Does this signify anything? There is only one fuse that I could find and thats the blown one. I didnt see any other fuses. Could it be the iso transformer? What should I check for? My dad has a scilliscope (dont know how spell it) to check the circuits but I wanted to check here first before going and taking the board out. Heres some pics and please notice, in the last pic there is alot of white powder or something coming from that bigger black capacitor. Is that bad? Thanks all.

If there was a lot of crackling, then most likely the flyback blew, shooting sparks to the frame which eventually blew the fuse. possibly lost the HOT and VR also. You might have popped a cap also, as they stink pretty good when they go...

Where is the flyback located? Is it that black box with the focus control on it? Any way to look and tell if its bad or I have to trace it?

yes, that is the flyback. You could find out if it's bad by replacing the fuse and turning it back on. if you didn't blow your HOT or VR, then the flyback will shoot sparks again. If the fuse blows right away then you lost other stuff and won't know for sure whether the flyback is bad.

You could pull the flyback and look for cracks or holes where there shouldn't be any. or just rebuild the chassis with new caps, check the HOT and VR while you have it out to see if they need replacing, check C36 for a short, and replace the flyback anyway since it only costs $19...

Okay the HOT transformer and Transistor are checked to be bad. Where is the best place to buy these parts? Never bought any before.
Also, my dad who is helping me wants me to find the schematics for the chassis board and also a startup procedure for when we first turn it back on. He said something about if its too bright or not set right it could hurt the flyback. Anyone know where I can find these?
The chassis serial # is WG900101 (is that the right #?) or is it 25K7191?
Thanks for the help.

yeah, looks it. I'm no master with those though, but there's one little area of concern to pay mention to. there were a few revisions of K7000, but the one that has different parts/caps/etc. than the other 7000 series monitors was the K7200. try reading around on the various WGM serial labels on the chassis, either on the board itself or I think with these they're in the metal tray part somewhere. it might even just say the model like the K7000 in my SFA3 cab (K7171) or if it uses the same format as some of these junk chassis's I was tinkering with earlier it might even be something like 2571 or something (meaning a 25" K7100).

read Bob's monitor ID page, the 7200 had some parts in different locations, you'll be able to tell.

the K7000 is kind of a pain in the ass in many respects, they're durable if rebuilt with new parts (generally anything you see that has white adjustment knobs is crap with these), but as you've now witnessed first-hand, when they take a shit... they take a shit hard.

very simple design though, easy to work on I think. if you're familiar with a user on here named cadillacman, he's got a few resources on them, he's pretty knowledgeable about them, and I think he's only been doing this stuff as long as I have (couple years) so yeah, not that hard to learn. :)

good luck.

It says 25K7191 on the chassis but my board doesnt look anythng like the K7200. It looks exactly like the K7000 pics though. If no one can tell me for sure which model it is I will order the Flyback repair kit for a K7000 and hope for the best. It would suck if its the wrong parts so I hope someone else can chime in.
The HOT on the K7000 repair kit matches the part # on mine so it must be it.

7191 is a K7000. If it was a K7200, it would be a 7201 or 7203.

Just get the K7000 rebuild parts...

Got the kit installed today and it works!!! Hopefully I'll get many years of use out of it. My dad mentioned to keep the brightness as low as possible to prolong the life. Thanks for the help and Bob Roberts for the parts and quick friendly service.
