so I was planning on getting a new plexi glass cut for my TMNT control panel because the original one was in horrible shape. it was looking pretty abused and nasty. There was no way I was gonna put that old beat up plexi glass back on over the new NOS cpo I got.

For the longest time I just had it laying around the garage while I fixed other things instead. so yesterday I decided I would just try to clean it up and see how it looks. so I busted out 1 Mr clean magic eraser and gave it a nice bath in the laundry sink. Honestly the damn thing came out Brand new. I should of took before and after pics cause it was ridiculous.

just wanted to share incase others are thinking about gettting new plexi glass cut. Give Mr Clean magic erasers a try first on your old ones.

I am starting a TMNT restore project. I have finally found all the parts and NOS artwork. My cab came stripped with no cp, just the bottom box and hinge. Did the original cp have plexi? Was the cp 3/4" with 1/8" plexi?

I too have fallen for the magic erasers... They are just absolutely amazing, I had stains that I couldn't get out with anything, but these things took it out with little effort.

Thanks Mr. Clean!!

They are great and really are the best thing out there....just be careful on sideart..you can use them ...even on silkscreen but don't scrub too hard or long (or it will take paint off)..and you'll get unbelievable results...they work miracles for cpo's with hard ground in dirt..never used on a bezel...will have to try that on old one to see.

I saw a post somewhere that Magic Erasers are just some sort of foam that you can buy in huge sheets for pennies a foot. If I find it again, I'll post it.

It does work very well. I used it on my Baby Pac playfield. Looks great.

wow nice work, I've never used magic erasers before I've always just used good ol soap, water, sponge and elbow grease. I heard good and bad things about the magic erasers that they could damage art, etc. how would they work on taking off cig, yellowed stained atari cabs?

yes I'm pretty sure it came with plexi glass originally. and your measurements seem about right.

This was done WITHOUT Magic Eraser:

Before (it's already been wiped down with a general cleaner, so you're not looking at surface dirt)

First a good scrubbing with a toothbrush using a mild detergent and a bit of degreaser (like Simple Green). Then a clean/polish with Novus 2 (or similar plastic polish). And finally a wipe down with Nu Vinyl to seal and protect.
I only break out the Magic Eraser for very stubborn spots, as it is too abrasive for general cleaning.

You probably could've had the same results in a quarter of the time with a magic eraser. Just take a look ad Mod's pics above- the same result with a magic eraser and warm water. Now, I wouldn't scrub for an hour on the art side of a marquee, but for cpo's there's nothing better IMHO.

Now, I agree that they are too abrasive for wooden kitchen cabinets (found out the hard way :))

I've done a few atari cabs that had the white vinyl...you won't believe how they can be restored...like I said..the areas of silkscreen are ok to go over..just be gentle..and you will remove just about every scuff and mark that isn't actual damage to the vinyl...amazing stuff...
I've done a dig dug...foodfight...and quantum and couldn't believe how new they all looked..

so do you think if I scrub lightly it would take off the cig yellow off the side vinyl and bring it back to white? atari cabs I'm talking about crystal castles, kangaroo

Yes, although I use either Simple Green or Clorox Cleanup to go over artwork. Be gentle with the magic erasers. When I finish, I go over the art one more time with a paper towel and Windex for a super shine.

I like to use Magic Eraser + Iso. Alcohol. Works like a charm.

Magic Eraser + 409 works good too.

Absolutely...the areas of the vinyl that are just the vinyl you can go really go at it ...usually the edges and lower portions of cab are the worst anyway...but you can go over the artwork too..just do it very gently and you will see the scuffs disappear...what I do is first do the portions of the cab with no artwork...and of course I usually wet the magic eraser a tad and then clean it a few times..after doing both sides of cab the magic eraser will lose some of its cleaning power..I then go over the art...helps make sure you don't take off art..because your being gentle and its lost a some of its potency.
