I feel your pain on the tube. I was organizing my parts last week and I lightly knocked the neck board on a original tron monitor and head the dreaded hiss.
If you didn't replace anything on the original chassis and got such a nice pic with a new tube, would that mean the original tube was shot anyway? I remember it was really washed out/dim.
Also, did you fix the suicide battery?
Its funny to notice the similarities between this and outrun...
Cool job though. I haven't built up the courage to try a tube swap... I guess if I was in the situation you were id be forced to.
