My First Restore - Track and Field

Had some time before work to put some more of it back together. I'm still waiting for a better marquee; talked to a couple of KLOV'ers and haven't found a really nice one yet. Anyway, here it is so far. It looks very purple in the picture probably due to the HDR setting on my phone. I was trying to reduce some of the glare:

Thanks guys.

You're right; I can't wait to play! I'm finishing it up tonight though (well, as finished as it can be without a bezel and new marquee). Pretty much just need to install sideart and monitor and a few small little touches. I'll try to take some pictures of the finished product without glare when I'm through.

Well, it's as done as it's going to get for now. I was standing there getting ready to put on the sideart and thought better of it for a minute. Did a search here, and it seems I have a little bit of reading to do before I attempt it. I can also see how the odd shape of the art could cause a little bit of difficulty in applying it, especially for a first-timer like myself. I'd rather not rush it and f*ck up my $150 art. It's going between two other cabs anyway, so the worst it'll do is bother me knowing it's not there for now.

Otherwise, I'm pretty damn happy with the way it came out. I reinstalled the monitor with a nice burn free tube that Greg gave me with it; looks really nice. Reintalled the freshly painted brackets and my nice new sheet of smoked plexi. The only issue I have to take a look at now is a non-working 2/4 players jump button, but I'm sure that's just a connection issue (worked ok before I took it apart). The edge connector is also a little loose and causes issues sometimes, but that's no big lift. Worst comes to worst, I'll just order a new harness from Bob Roberts and renovate the wiring. I might just wind up ordering a marquee from mamemarquees/gameongrafix since even the most anal people here seem happy with their work. Then, all I have to do is get a bezel (*cough* Prok! *cough*) and it's complete.

I really enjoyed the process and look forward to doing another one. Maybe if I find another T/F cab I can renovate it into a Hyper Sports.....we'll see. That's it for now though. When I finally find/apply the missing pieces, I'll be sure to update.

(I'll upload pics a little later.)

Wow, can't wait to see it with that awesome sideart on! I never really paid much attention to Track & Field as a kid, but this thread makes me appreciate it now.

T&F

Nick,

It looks great, it certainly has come along way from what it looked like when you picked it up.

Can't wait to see the final product.

Greg

Thanks very much all.

Greg,

Yeah it was a little beat, but the cab is solid and that's what counts. Made everything fairly easy to fix. The monitor makes a huge difference too. Thanks again for that!

Anyway, some pictures of it's "temporary doneness". As said before, one day I'll do the sideart; for now, I'm going to leave it as is. I moved it out from under the lights (mostly) for these; this is it's home for now in my sad little basement sort-of-cade:

And the ones that haven't made it down yet:

A couple of closer-ups:

Here you can see some of the paint that has chipped off the marquee; makes the guy look a little like a leper. Not a huge deal; I'll find a nicer one someday:

The control panel came out great and feels really nice. I jerry-rigged the 2/4 player jump button; it's not working due to a crappy connection at the board on the edge connector. Ordered a new connector though from Mike's Arcade so once that's installed, it should fix the problem for good:

The new smoked plexi looks great. I think it also brings out the colors in the monitor better too I think. I took the screeshot with the lights on mistakenly so it looks little washed out, but the colors on the tube are beautiful when viewed normally:

So, that's it for now. Thanks for following everyone. When I finally get the bezel/sideart/marquee squared away, I'll be sure to update with final pictures. (If anyone is curious about the edge connector repair, I'll post pictures in the other thread I made about it for the sake of any other newbs like myself that might want to see it).

Just a quick note: I've gotten a bunch of questions about the paint. No, it's not nearly as purple as it appears (becuase I agree it looks really f'ing purple). It's a combination of the florescent lighting and my iPhone camera. When looked at in person and compared to the unfaded blue paint inside the cab itself, it's not a perfect match, but looks pretty close.

I've gotten a couple questions about the rear plexi bracket so I snapped a couple of pictures to show it. Bascially, the rear bracket mounts over two carraige bolts that are already attached to the cab wood. The bracket goes over the two bolts and secures with wing nuts:

A picture without the bracket in place showing the carraige bolts sticking out of the cab:

A picture of the bracket itself. It's the only bracket IIRC with out two holes in it; the rest have at least three:
