My First Restore: A Mortal Kombat Story

Looking for a little paint advice.

This weekend I sanded both sides of the cabinet with a fairly aggressive grit (60) to get the paint off. My plan is to paint it and lightly sand before applying the side art.

Should I give it a once over with 150 grit before painting it or can I just paint it now and then hit it with something super fine like 800 grit before applying the side art?

Half sanded:

All sanded:

Lots of progress this week. I was able to apply the side art, add the t-molding, and reinstall the control panel box. Cosmetically, the machine is coming along nicely. The marquee needs something firm behind it for support. I may try to cut a piece of lexan for that. It's signed by Daniel Pesina so I also may try to find a slim marquee holder so his signature along the top edge of the marquee won't be obstructed.

I have a move list bezel that I may try to have dry mounted on some black core stock so it stays nice and flat.

The T-Molding I bought was enough to do the whole machine except for the front strip of the CP so I need another 2 feet of Bright Red T-Molding. Very happy with the current state of the restore.

do you have the glass for the front of the marquee? there are plastic edge pieces that attach to the top and and you tuck the marquee under that hold it tight.

to hold marquee up, you could put some plexi behind it ?

There are some converted cabs where the original marquee was printed onto the glass or Lexan. Once converted, to keep the translite marquee from folding over, I find in some of my cab pick-ups use two half-as-thck sheets of Lexan to sandwich the translite marquee together. I find this works better since the back piece of Lexan keeps the marquee from yellowing.

Capcom Big Blue cab owners have to do this on our marquees since the dimensions of the marquee is large and the translite material easily folds over. Give it a shot.

I do have the glass, I do not have these plastic clips. Where can I get a set?

You can get them at Michael's Art Supply too. It is used to keep an art portfolio loosely binded together.

Nice work. I have a Midway Universal cab (same exact thing as a MK1 cab) that I will get around to doing the same with eventually. Thanks for the tips!

jp335i was kind enough so send me a pair of the marquee clips. The bezel that came with my artwork package is very nice but printed on material that is a bit thin. I went to a couple of local framing places to see if I could get it mounted on a heavier stock. turns out what I wanted is called "dry mounting". If its anything like dry hopping, I'm gonna love it. I have the bezel dry mounted and they even cut out the center for me. Looks fantastic but doesn't taste as good as a dry hopped beer. Oh well. I'll be painting the monitor bracket bolts and mounting the monitor on Christmas. Pretty sure all that I will need at that point is the game. Yup. I will have completed a full Mortal Kombat cabinet restore without a Mortal Kombat board.

Looking good! You can take a fat sharpie to the inside edge of that bezel to get rid of the white edge if it's distracting.

Now someone sell this man an MK board so he can enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was thinking, I had it mounted on black foam core so the only white that shows is the inside edge of the bezel. Totally gonna sharpie it.

I have a full set that's got the proto roms, I can make anything you want. If interested shoot me a pm

Looking good. I have a MK2 cab that needs the same treatment.

Thanks man! MKII is definitely on the "want" list. But it will have to wait. I have several other projects in line once this one is done. Dynamo Showcase is likely next, going for a big blue style showcase with SSF2 in it, also have Police trainer, NBA Jam, and Wayne Gretzy boards in my collection, going to try to grab a few project cabs from a friend who just acquired a bunch from an operator and do one of those next. Always on the lookout for an MK2 cab though.

Oh man. I wish I'd known that a few weeks ago. There was a local guy selling a police trainer cab project for double digits.

No worries, I have the board, just need a basic cab to put it in. I'll probably throw if in an HS5 if I can find one laying around. Its the kind of machine that would fit the theme if its all beat up, like it was left in the basement of a police academy or something.
