My First Restoration Thread: Vs. Unisystem (The Goonies)

It's coming together, looking great! Are you using Latex or oil based paint for the orange??

Great job!

Around `86 and `87, I remember hearing Vs. The Goonies attract sounds in every large arcade I stepped into.

Thanks!

I use latex based paint on all my cabs. I know most guys here would prefer oil based, but I haven't had any problems with the latex and supposedly is better for the environment.

Dang, I was hoping you had a color code for the orange in oil.

Latex can come out fine with the right prep work.

Yup, it turns out great for me.

My bad. I'm sure there are plenty of guys who could offer their color codes. Maybe search the forums, I know there have been a handful of threads on color codes, specifically Nintendo cabs.

Cab all painted ready for a touch up cleaning.

Salvaging the original offset t-molding. There are some dents and scratches, but overall, pretty good condition. Just needed a good cleaning. Before and after.

After cleaning the cab and parts, putting it all carefully back into place.

New Asahi Seiko coin mech faceplates.

Posted in General Discussion:

After a good couple weeks of constant work, I'm finally finished! It turned out much better than I had imagined.

I love the Goonies and the way it looks in a Vs. Unisystem conversion cab. The orange color is definitely appropriate.

I busted out my Mezco Goonies action figures that I had in storage and I think they make great show pieces on top of the cab. I also placed the Vs. The Goonies serial sticker on the corner of the bezel. Now, it looks more "official."

Fellow KLOVers I'd like to thank for helping make this project come true through parts, advice, motivation, suggestions, and/or moral support:

Bravo!

Simply fantastic! Seeing this motivates me to restore my Time Pilot and do some touch up work to my Marvel Super Heroes game.

Fantastic job...and a great display. That T-molding really turned out well. Makes me rethink my position on Nintys ;) Of course, now I'm even more frustrated as I sit here on my day off, waiting for my parts to come to finish my restore...

Great job, Jess. You work alot faster than I do, it seems like it takes me forever to prep a cab for painting. What kind of paint did you use on the coin door? I like the "texture" it has. It looks like Hammertone paint from Rustoleum, but their black is actually more like dark gray. That coin door looks great.

Thanks Greg!

You're exactly right about the coin door paint I'm using. It's Rustoleum hammered finish and it does have a slight gray appearance even though the can suggests black. Not a big deal to me though as it still looks better than before imo. :)

Jess.... Looks wicked with that Nintendo neon light! Very inspiring job! Giving me the kick in the ass, to finish mine! :) BTW: I stand corrected on the white T-mold! Nice job!
:hail:

Side note: Jess and I had discussed T-molding and whether to go with the traditional 9/16" white or the 9/16" black. I own a uni cab that has the black installed. It's an orange cab, like Jess', and it had Vs. Hogan's Alley installed, when I got it. I kind of like it, especially with it matching the marquee brackets, on mine.

I also wanted to comment on the marquee. For some reason, it's HTF a Vs Goonies marquee, in good condition. Yours looks great! Repo or original? Either way, nicely done!

It's NOS! :D

Now I just need to find the cardboard topper. Original would be awesome. If not, I was thinking I could fake it and use a SMB cardboard topper and do a nice repro print of the goonies art to lay over it. It's just standard movie promo art that's die cut on the top.

Awesome job Jess!!
Your skills are now complete... Ha Ha
That thing looks clean, actually all your machines do.
That's gotta be the nicest Goonies cab I've seen.
I'd do the truffle shuffle in celebration but no one really want's to see that...
Chunk'll do it though.
Congrats on a great resto.

Haha. Thanks Greg, but I think we all know that you're one of the jedi masters at restoring Nintendo cabs. You make me look but a padawan learner.

I'm about to start working on my WBMB soon and even though it isn't as bad as yours was originally, I think it still won't turn out as nice as yours. I mean seriously, your before and after shot is like night and day. Haha. Wish me luck though.

May the force be with me!

This is a repost from another thread. I figured I'd post it here to serve as some sort of closure for this restore thread... :)

I know it's hard for some people to believe that I gave up the cab. Almost every guy who followed my restore told me I was crazy for doing so or that I would regret it. To be honest, I didn't have that much of an attachment to it and I still have no regrets for a handful of reasons:

1. The cabinet was particle board. I did a pretty good job with patching it up, repainting it and cleaning it, but in the long run, I decided I don't want to have any particle board cabs. I have a mild case of OCD when it comes to my cabs and I wasn't completely satisfied with how some of the edges and bottom corners turned out and didn't want to spend the time to fix it knowing it could easily get damaged again.
2. I only restored it so I could house Vs. The Goonies which I kept. PCB, Marquee and serial sticker.
3. Although I spent a good amount of time restoring it, it wasn't really hard for me to do.
4. I don't have a lot of space for games and I had opportunities to pick up a couple of more that could make my game room just a bit more unique.
5. I can always make another Vs. The Goonies upright which I plan to do when we move into a bigger place a few years from now. Nintendo cabs aren't rare. At least since I've been in the hobby.
6. I got a red tent which is much more versatile even though it takes more space.

That's really nice work!

On the coin mech's, did you just procure new fronts for them or did you replace everything?

I'm asking because I have 2 set's of mech's and it seems silly to throw them out, is there a way to make the front look fresh again?

Thanks :)
