I know I'm a newb at this but I thought I'd keep you all up to date on my Gorf Upgright redos. I still to date cannot get the sound to work, although it used to, even after doing a bob roberts cap kit on the linear ps. Ill show those pics later. The first part of my restoration is a new cpo. Thanks to Rich at This Old Game I ordered one a few weeks ago and like a kid on Christmas eagerly awaited its arrival. It showed up a few days ago and so I got to work.
First pic is of my flight stick and cpo. I got a second stick off ebay so I could replace mine just in case I couldnt get the handle off. Finding a local place that sold star security bits was a no go so i got mine online from summit racing for 10 bucks. The screws came off easy except for one. I reamed the inside security bump off and even slotted the screw to make it easier to uncease and even used a teflon lubricant but it was a no go. So I cut one side of the stick off and finally removed the screw with pliers. All those years of rust almost welded the screw onto the stick mount. I cleaned all screw holes with teflon penetrant and made sure the two bulbs were working and secure. Glad I had that second flight stick!!
I then removed all 6 carriage bolts (they dont sell these at Lowes) from underneath the panel. The bolts were clean, but the aluminum color was completely gone revealing a copper tone. I did find some professional grade rustoleum aluminum color spray paint and gave the tops of the bolts 2 coats. Looked good enough for me.
The cpo still wouldnt come off...ahh yes, I had to remove the player start buttons. The were held on by aluminum nuts. Once unscrewed, just lift off the button housing and the button mounts come free. I marked player one and player two before removing, just so no guessing would be needed. Viola, the mount slid off and over the dismantled flight stick.
I installed the new cpo.....gorgeous!!!! The brand new aluminum painted cpo just popped. Too bad I didnt order new player buttons. Mine are faded with age and almost warped. The cpo fit nicely and I reinstalled all parts I had removed. No problems with that part.
Now the flight stick. I cleaned up the two black parts of the handle and trigger. Figured best time to do this. Now I just needed to replace those security screws. Went to Lowes and found some 10-32 1/2" machine screws that would work. I cut them down with a dremel to the 3/8" length that the original ones were and then spray painted the heads with Flat Black Krylon. Looks great...and they can be removed easily if need be.
