Bought my first game after lots of searching. 1982 Ms. Pacman. very, very original. Basically sat for last 20 yrs in some guys garage. $160 cash. When plugged in, it powers up, sound effects and all, but monitor is dead. I will start with checking some fuses and such. My goal is to install a new monitor.

Advice?

What are some good first steps to clean up and op-check this game? The monitor is dead. no humm. no lights. no glow... It looks to be the original monitor.

The original manual and such were still on the back access door.

That is a nice one! Congrads... Great price too..

Nice. Never seen an original manual before, wanna sell it?

Looks like a G07 monitor. Id see if Chris has a chassis for it. Also I'd replace the fuse blocks and lose the filter board.

Most dead G07's I run into need a new flyback, the 1.5 amp fuse on the monitor chassis would be blown if that's the case.

Decent looking game, I'd just fix the monitor and clean it up a bit first. :D

Thanks for all the replies. In Hawaii, I have found games to be cheap because homes are very small and no ones has room for these games. 98% are brought by accident with a military/government home move, then sold cheap.

I think I will try the "Bob Roberts" Super Cap Kit. $38.00 + shipping. I think the flyback is bad.

I plan to inquire at some electronic repair shops to see if they will do the work for me at a reasonable cost.

Nice ... the monitor should be an easy fix ... Keep us informed of how you make out ...

Check the fuse holder in the bottom of the game, they are usually bad. I wouldnt replace that monitor. I would rebuild it.

+1 on the fuse holder check, and fuses.

But also do a continuity test on the power cord, could have been pinched, or partially cut.

My Ms Pacman was that way. I replaced the cord, and the game worked great.

Dangit! I thought this was Josie's thread for a second... :D

Nice! Mine has similar symptoms, but is much, much, much, much more worse for wear... :(

Congrats on the game! I hope you get it up an running in no time.

Did you tell yourself that this would be the only game you'd buy? Because you're just lying to yourself.

Funny, funny Jawhn!! :p You knew it couldn't be me when the cap kit was mentioned...

Congrats on your first purchase! I hope you enjoy it!:)

In the picture of the PCB, there is a filter board plugged in between the main wireing harness and the PCB, you can remove that as its not really needed and can be a point of failure.

Like everyone else said the fuse block in the bottom of the cabinate is very prone to failure in ms. pacman's

The deluxe cap kit from Bob Roberts is a good idea, it will eliminate most of the known issues that could be keeping your monitor from working.

Also check the power cord and make sure you have three prongs on the end that plugs into the wall, removing the ground is unsafe and can cause "hum bar", which distorts the image.

If your not very savy with electronics then having a repair shop do the work on the electronics is a good idea.

yes the little fuse holders get weak over time and dont grip the fuse tightly enough to allow proper electron flow to operate the game. very common failure point.

you can do the work yourself! its easy! just pay attention to how you take it apart. any tools you buy will pay for themselves by not paying for repair.

sell the filter board on ebay for $4.99, someone will probably buy it.

fun stuff.

...is that this thing?

That whole board can be removed? Or am I confused as usual?

Good luck with that, it is extremely laughable. You would be better off buying a rebuilt chassis than having any of the locals "try" to do a cap kit for you.

Sorry, forgot to add... Nice Score!
