Talk about being somewhere at the right time! Last week I was got home from school, hopped on my computer to print out a shipping label for a fellow klover's package and decided on a whim to check my local craigslist... I'm sure glad I did! On the toys/games page I see an ad for a pinball machine, posted less than 7 minutes before! I quickly looked on IPDB.org to check out the title, 'Devil's Dare'. Seconds later I'm responding and waiting by the phone. Its the guy! So we're talking and hes telling me all about the machine, then he tells me he's older and can't help lift (CRAP!). Using my senses I told him I'll have someone available in the evening, and can come over immediately at 5, this was of course a lie, but eventually I found a family friend to help me out (phew). I just wanted to secure his address so no one could grab it from under my feet. So an hour later, and after $75.00 I walked away with a decent looking Devil's Dare.

Now here's the thing, upon getting there I noticed there was something wrong with the power supply...diode was fried and it looked like there was a burn mark around the ceramic resistor at the top (might have been the lighting though). I've been doing some research and decided on picking up the RottenDog replacement system-80 power supply board. For 65.00 or so shipped how can you go wrong? I also scoped out big daddy enterprises and picked up their power supply kit, including 4 new bridge rectifiers and filter caps. Hopefully this will take care of my short term system-80 woes.

I just started cleaning up the playfield and it's coming out great! I can't believe how much dirt grime is on there, but it comes off pretty easily. I'm debating whether I should remove the factory mylar thats covering much of the playfield. On the one hand, it's nice having it on the other, but in some ways it just looks so crappy compared to the polished up wood areas.

Notice how the center acrylic piece is silk-screened light green...every other image I've seen on the net has a clear plastic piece with the words "devil's dare" printed on it. What gives?

bottom really needs to be replaced. I'm going to try and convince my girlfriend's uncle who's a furniture maker to help me with this, as of now it smells/looks like a hell hole!

congrats on the find. But I must warn you, this will not be your last pin. It's like a sickness! :) Good luck with the repairs.

As for the Mylar, on a couple of pins I've helped a friend remove some factory mylar, only to find that it started to lift the art on the playfield as well. You may get lucky and it come off fine, so good luck to you.

Looks like someone made their own plastic. That explains why it doesn't look original. It doesn't look too bad though as far as home made plastics go.

Great deal. I would love to pick up one of those.

I would probably leave the mylar unless you're planning to clear the playfield.

check and see if it has the battery still on the cpu and if so remove it. hopefully it has not damaged anything

nice looking game by the way

...if the voltage on the replacement bridge rectifiers are higher than whats listed in the schematic, is this an okay replacement? I know with Caps Bob Roberts mentions having a higher voltage is okay...have no clue if the same rule of thumb applies to rectifiers! ha. I think 4x 35a, 200v rectifiers are coming later this week.

Thanks. It looks as if the battery on the main board was replaced at some point, but the previous owner didn't mention when...that bad boy will be coming off tomorrow!

replaced the line filter and power cord today, but most importantly I installed the replacement power supply! woo! Machine seems to be alive and kicking (no pun intended). There's still so much to do though...

not bad for a machine that's 4 years older than me! (I was born in '86)

Looks good Dave! I saw that listing on Craigslist but was long gone by the time I checked into it. Good score!

hey Gregg,
I simply got lucky with this one! Right place, right time.

anyways - heres a few photos of the playfield after cleaning and waxing. I must have spent a good 6 hours today cleaning, but it was well worth it. Machine is almost presentable.

next up is doing all the ground mods from clay's guide..game is humming like no one's business and the display boards have a tendency to pulsate.

I haven't played the game yet, but I keep thiking about how utterly useless the upper flipper looks! Seems like it would only hit one area of the upper playfield.

Looks good.

I find it a LOT easier to clean with all of the posts, flipper bats, ball guides and stuff removed. You'll also have a nicer finished product at the end as well.

Just my thoughts. Looks great though! Keep up the good work :)

Looks nice, I just bought a Bride of pinbot and a Devils dare.I pick them up this weekend I can't wait! The wifes not to happy about the Devils Dare but I think its a nice looking pin.You got a better price, but I can't have all the good deals I guess.I paid $1300 for the pair plus $100 in gas and a 9 hr round trip to Montana.
