Long story long, I've pretty much been out of the hobby this past year due to personal reasons. I ended up selling off all my games (a whopping 4-5 of them) except DK. We sold our place and moved most stuff into storage. I hadn't played a game in over 3 months until going to CAX a couple of weeks ago. With a new home purchase hopefully closing soon and having a blast at CAX, I got the itch again.

Well, last week, I saw a listing for a Mappy. The price wasn't ridiculous and the game looked really clean in the tiny CL pictures. It just happened to be down the street from Prairiedillo. He already owns a pretty nice dedicated Mappy, but he went to check out the game since it was so close. He messaged me right away, "You won't believe the counter. HUO as I suspected (343 plays), I can cover you and hold it if you're sure you want it." Since I'm not an idiot, I said, "Yes! I'll take it!"

I never thought I'd own a HUO game as they usually seem to go for top dollar. I've always loved the unique look and art of Mappy. I've been playing it on Namco Collection lately to prepare myself and I forgot how challenging and addicting it is. I've only broke 50K so far though. I have some learning to do.

So a huge thank you to Prairiedillo for helping me snatch this game up, for being content enough to keep his nice Mappy, and for being generous enough to pass this deal to me. A true brother in this great hobby.

I know, POIDH, so here are some pictures. She's a beauty other than natural wear to the CPO and some marquee fading which is common.

so thats what a original minty fresh coin door looks like! haha.... that pic of the coin door and front panel artwork is beautiful. even the bally midway metal badge looks minty fresh too.

congrats to you jess! looks like a real beaut. will look great next to the dk :)

forgot to mention.... make sure to throw a galaga pcb in there (just to mix it up a lil bit) . i think galaga boards will play in that cabinet too? i could be wrong.

Shes a beauty for sure. How does one know from the "343" on the coin counter that its HUO?

That's a valid question and I didn't get the background from the seller (maybe I should), but the game was produced and built in the early 80s and it shows no signs of wear from being in service, I was assuming it was. Maybe it was in service somewhere at some point, but if it was, it wasn't for long or it was in a place where it obviously didn't get played much. I'm going to go with the assumption of HUO.

Thank you for playing devil's advocate though. :D

@PaulOlson Thanks Paul! Yes, I was going through serious withdrawal and CAX really sucked me back in.

@ENDOFLINE Thanks Chris! The coin door is amazing. Never seen one this clean. Galaga does swap in and play so I'll need to find a PCB eventually or if the price is right, grab a Galaga again and put it next to it. :)

I'm definitely not questioning it, I just was wondering if there was a certain way to tell from the counter. Seriously, it looks perfect so there is no reason to say it isnt HUO.

It looks almost fresh out the box (aside from the CPO).

How would you define HUO. Everyone can make up a backstory.

Well, I'll speak up cause it's still in my possession and sitting next to my own Mappy. Pics coming once I figure out why my Mappy's marquee box is blowing a fuse...

I suspected that it was HUO after only looking at the outside. There seems to be zero signs of kicking the front plate, typical route wear. Most Mappy's seem to have lock bars as other Mappy collector/restore threads have mentioned. My own nice/low wear Mappy really needs coin door restoration. This one looks practically new.

1) Mappy has no freeplay. This one was set to coin entry and they didn't have the key to the back door. You can coin up through the service switch but then again if it was routed for 343 plays then it totally shows zero signs of it. The coin box w/ it's lid look in imaculate condition.

2) How clean it is. I have had games in service for a few years and every couple of months you see drips from drink spills etc. This thing has zero. There are no coins rattling around the floor of the thing. Not to mention zero rat crap, trash, or tampering of the coin slots. I've pulled tooth picks, chop sticks and even a razor blade from a coin slot....

3) It had no feet oddly but the bottom was still super clean. The bottom wasn't even scrapped up having had no feet. The wheels even show very little wear and no gum etc... No spider webs, cocoons etc under there.... My guess is that it sat on carpet most of it's life.

I can bullet point the issues this thing has, but there is pretty much near zero doubt that it's never been on a route. It has sat in the sun as the T-molding has a crack and fade on one side.

The guy was selling it for his brother that had only had it for a few years. He purchased it for $600 and took a loss selling it.

@EOL The bezel is in really nice condition. Better than the others that I've seen. It has typical fade that matches it's time in the sun with the rest of the machine but the flaking is minimal. Usually they flake where they rub the wood supports on both sides of the bezel but this is minimal. All Mappy bezels also suffer from the pain/film sorta lifting from the glass. This has some of it also but it really hasn't really flaked much.

Whoa, long explanation. Thanks for clarifying.

It was a valid question Jow and I guess Prairiedillo's explanation explains it better than I could.

mappy

that cpo looks dried up, not worn imho. very nice mappy, thats a score! i have one in storage but after seeing this i am forced to get it out with the kangaroo and put it in the garcade.
is there any difference in this game playe compared to the 60-1? this is one of the nicest cabs i like the lit up tall marquee!

Yes, that's exactly it... they all actually crack at the 90 deg folds and at the top edge where they wrap around the top lip.

Most Mappy's actually have wear and often movement damage in key areas. Marquee boxes aften get smashed also from moving it around as not everyone folds down the marquee box to move it. This one had zero. You can tell also from the orignal CL pics.

When Jess had mentioned the Mappy to me, I had already contacted the owner and gotten an idea of if he would deal and if there was a mad rush for it. Most of the SBay dudes seemed to overlook this one as "just another mappy."

Beautiful Mappy, nesjess. Congrats! Kudos to PrairieDillo for alerting you to it and holding it for you.
