never thought I would get a game for free but tonight I got a free Desert Assault game.

The guy said it does not work, and I haven't had a chance to try it yet. But the game is mostly complete.

The cabinet is in pretty rough shape.

The whole front control panel and wood underneath it comes completely off.

No glass over the monitor.

Monitor cardboard bezel is ripped to shreds.

Where the coin door would be is just a piece of wood, with what looks to be a credit button.

It does look like there might be some artwork underneath the paint on the sides.

With some nails, glue and a little TLC it might be salvageable.

That's a missile command.

Whats even better than finding a game that doesn't work on craigslist?

Finding out it works. The game has a bad interlock (I think its called that) switch on it.

I taped it down plugged the game in and it fired right up!

Score!

Now I just need to find out where I can get curved Plexiglas for the control panel, since this one is chipping away.

Figure out the size of the Plexiglas to cover the monitor, and get a card board monitor bezel.

The rest I should be able to put back together or refinish enough to make it usable.

nice score, try using goof off on the sides but be careful cause it will eat the vinyl if you leave it on too long.

I wouldn't worry too much about trying to restore the side art unless you plan to convert it back to a Missile Command again. And if you do start to do that, be prepared to spend some big bucks (~$100) on the trackball alone.

Nice score! If I were you, I'd play it for a while, then sell it for an up grade :)

Cool I was wondering what cabinet it was. The top looked different that the pic on klov page.

I wonder if I can save any of the artwork underneath.

If possible whats the best way to try and remove the paint on this cabinet.

The top looks different because they moved the speakers to the top when the mounted the Assault marquee.

Just a tip: if it's a three-position interlock switch, you should be able to pull the switch all the way out to bypass it instead of having to tape it down.

(I felt like a dumbass when I finally figured that out. :D)

Yeah at this time I cannot afford to convert the game back to a missile command. I just figured if I could salvage the artwork it would look a hell of a lot better that the puke brown it is now. :D

lol thats the first thing I tried. I think It has 3 of the switches on it, 2 in the back and one in the front.

The 2 in the back work just like you explained. but the front one comes apart when you try to pull the switch out. Thats why I taped it down. :)

Got some of the paint off tonight. Took a little more than I wanted to on one side. :( The artwork isn't in the greatest condition, but I figure it looks a lot better that the nasty brown paint on it.

Too tired to finish the second side tonight plus my hands are cramping up from the scraper.

I plan on just using the old missile command side art on it with the game I got in it.

Maybe if the funds come up I could possible get a missile command game and controls for it, but as of right now I can't afford to do it.

Once I get the paint off I plan of fixing the cabinet a little bit, and try to fix some of the damaged wood to make it sturdy again.

Funny, Desert Assault in a converted Moon Patrol cabinet was the first free game I ever got as well. It also didn't work, and that was because there was no power cord.
