Yay! I finally brought home my first project: Williams Defender. Pics in a bit. She powers up but doesn't run, just displays vertical bars & no sound. Some screen burn in, and wear & tear from the years, but overall pretty solid, I think, and exactly what I was hoping for as a first restoration project.

I'm giddy. =) Soon as I have some work to show, I'll start a resto. thread.

Congrats! That should be a lot of fun. I predict you will have another game in a month :) haha
Cant wait to see some pics and some progress.

Oh boy...was inspecting the inside a bit more closely after lunch and found an unplugged connector. She now powers on, runs through POST, and runs through the attract mode! Still no sound yet, and I can't advance credits and get it to play. Could be the control board I guess, haven't taken the multi meter to it yet to run things down. Woop woop!

Some quick iPhone pics...better quality ones on my wife's camera but these should do for now.

Congrats! That looks nice. Makes me want a Defender also! I know peeps don't agree but I think Defender made more money than any other video arcade game ever, by far and I mean millions and millions, Williams didn't put coin counters in there, so nothing can ever be confirmed.

DAMN fine cab you got there. Welcome to the addiction.

FYI - less than two years ago, I had under 100 posts here....just sayin. Be careful, you'll get sucked in.

There's a black wire that runs over to the 6 or 7 pin connector on the power supply, on the right. It provides the ground for all your coin door stuff. Since you put a switcher in, the ground isn't connected to the coin door anymore. That's why it won't coin up.

Thanks Lyons! I pulled the molex off the switching PS and connected it to the original. That let me click over some credits. I found branding on the switching power supply converter board which marked it as ArcadeShop.com. Looking at their site, this seems to be the one:

Now to find some documentation and see if they wired it in wrong, or something.

Only thing left to figure out now is the sound (still none, but the speaker gets hum if I adjust the pot, so there's power there) and the controls (non working yet, but there's continuity from the switches to the molex, I've tested that much).

For $100 bucks, it seems I actually started with a fairly good buy!

ps. as a new guy on the site, seeing my first real thread get activity is really cool. Thanks for making me feel welcome!

It looks like the switcher is wired into the Isolated 110VAC going to the monitor. Only the monitor should be run off of this line. Tying the switcher into the 110VAC going INTO the isolation transformer might be a good idea.

$100 Defender = good deal.

Congrats on your first game, Defender is a great start!!! July was my one year anniversary...I picked up 9 games in that time!!! It's a sickness for sure.

Nice score dude, looks like a nice looking game. Sounds like you're close to having it up and running. Defender's a great game, excellent first purchase. Now you've been bitten by the bug. Soon you'll be stealing you sister's tv to get another game fix! ;-) j/k

Used to love watching the good Defender players as an 8 year old kid. Hearing the sounds still gets me jazzed, makes me feel 8 again. Never put too many of my precious quarters in it as a kid though, too damn hard. Now I can suck at it all day and not spend a dime!
