So after years of searching, but never quite finding an acceptable deal on a cabinet I want (In Connecticut here, it's nothing but professional dealers who think their shit is gold) I finally bit the bullet and picked this up from a Craigslist ad. $275 for a working 4 Player Sunset Riders in so-so cosmetic shape, did I get hosed, or was this a good deal?
Cosmetically the cabinet isn't horrible, but it's not great. As you can see from the pics, the side art is pretty torn, the title art is ripped too, there's chips in the wood, particularly on the bottom of the machine, and the back door needs to be replaced entirely. Mechanically however, the game is fine, all the buttons work, although the monitor looks like it may need to be re-calibrated. Thankfully there isn't any burn in, but for some odd reason the "Winners Don't Do Drugs" screen comes up discolored, and there are some spots in the game that seem too light to me.
Regardless, I think I did pretty good for my first cabinet. To start today, I sanded down the very top where the wood appeared to have some water damage and had some chipped areas, and spray painted it black. Tomorrow my goal is to detach the control panel so I can actually have a chance to get the damn thing into the house.
From what I've read, the control panel is attached with three bolts, but from taking a quick look at it this afternoon, I have a hard time seeing where it is bolted and what kind of bolts it has. I see in the front at the bottom of the control panel there is a hinge of some sort, but what is the hinge for, and how to I get the control panel to move on the hinge? Any advice or better yet, pictures, explaining this to me would be greatly appreciated.
My long terms plans for this machine is to get it inside and get rid of all the Sunset Riders crap (It's not a BAD game, but it gets pretty dull pretty quick), and convert it into a TMNT cabinet once I can get my hands on a marquee, side art, and control panel overlay. My other goal is to modify the contol panel and add some more buttons so I can actually play something more than Sunset Riders or TMNT. I'm not sure what kind of crack Konami was smoking when they decided not to put even so much as a Start button on these cabinets, but I suppose it was probably intentional to limit vendors ability to convert the cabinet.
Based on what I can see from the schematics in the manual, Player one and two can support three more buttons, while player three and four can support five more. Unfortunately this seems to rule out me ever getting to run Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter on this thing, at least not without replacing the entire control panel. Can anyone point me to some information about adding more buttons to an existing cabinet? From the looks of it, it doesn't seem too difficult, but maybe I'm underestimating it.
