My dream, your nightmare :) X-Men vs Street Fighter Volume

Well, I'd like to start with thanking the mods for accepting me. I've been a long time collector of console systems having 95% of consoles since the Atari (multiple models) all the way up to all the next gen systems, but I finally got the room and the income to start collecting arcade systems, and I want to start working on them as well so I have something to teach my 3 year old as he grows, and he has the same passion for video games I do even though I try to make sure he does more outside than I did :p.

Well enough about me, so my first purchase was here locally I purchased World Class Bowling, X-Men vs Street Fighter, and Soul Calibur. All were supposed to be in great working condition except Soul Calibur needed a power supply. Knowing enough to know that if that was all that was wrong with it it'd be a cheap fix for a nice game with the art work in amazing shape I bit the bullet and paid a little more than I wanted to at $600.00 (these would not have been my first choice in games but live in the middle of no where) and scooped up the lot, but once I got the games home there was an issue with X-Men vs Street Fighter.

The volume was so loud my neighbors 300 yards away could hear it lol. I opened it up it has the test button, the free play button and what looks like it would be a volume knob. I twisted it and it wouldn't turn the game down at all. So I went into test mode and went to where the volume was and it says its at 39 (less than half way) and I can adjust it at all. I turned the sound off but that only works until you start playing or drop a quarter.

Any suggestions on what to try next? I've looked up countless pages on google, as well as downloaded the user manual and so far nothing helpful. I've always been able to fix all consoles but this is a new area for me and dont know where to start so any help would be appreciated, and I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I learn and go. Thanks for your patience and understand in advance, and sorry for the drawn out message.

(Also in the 4 player world class bowling is there any golf/bowling combo game that I could swap it out so I could play both without adding a new machine?)

Check the Xmen board, the bottom board will have volume controls.

^ This.

There are buttons on the side of the bottom board (called an "A" board), which controls the volume. See the three blue buttons in the picture.

That's what I was afraid of. I fixed up a Street Fighter 2 game before when I used to buy and sell without collecting, but it has no back so it was easy to access. This one has a full back but the last person to put it together rigged it up a bit with nails/screws etc it's a mess smh. Last time I buy stuff in a dark room haha. Thanks, I'll rip it apart and let you know if it worked.

I can see this from the front, this is what I have and it's the original/generic cab so I definitely have to get in from the back. My "mancave" has horrible lighting but the suns bright in there during the day and I work from home so tomorrow during my break I'll figure out how to get in there and do that. Wish I had been accepted on here when I still had daylight I've been dying to play something besides bowling haha.

Also since it's a generic cabinet and once I get s.c. set up I'll already have a fighting game (with really nice art on top of it) what other games would you recommend putting in the X-Men vs Street Fighter machine that would utilize the 6 buttons and joystick?

Thanks again and will update you tomorrow if this fixed the problem.

If you can reach it from the front just reach in and press the buttons. See the three black buttons on the bottom left in the picture above? Just find that spot on your game and press one of them and see what happens. It'll either take you into the test screen, turn the volume up, or turn the volume down.

Wow thanks for the diagram. I should easily be able to reach that once I open the coin mechanism and will save me the headache of destroying the other guys cob job until I possibly change out the game itself, but I plan to play it until the whole family is sick of it and can get Soul Calibur up and running. Also won't send my 3 year old crying when I turn it on and destroy his ear drums poor guy, none of us were expecting that.

On another note I was shocked to see how good we ever had to be to play these games with any skill once I realized that the owner can set the game from Easy,Normal, Hard 1,2,3,4,5, and Expert. Which it was set to expert, no wonder it took so many years to get good at our favorite games :p they knew what they were doing haha.

Well here I sat trying to sleep at 3am wondering if it was really that simple so finally I said screw it grabbed the cell phone so I had a small light to put in the machine looked in there and of course the board was upside down. So I blindly reached in there and unplugged something so the whole machine isnt working...

Just kidding (4am humor), that was simple and I feel a bit on the slow side. Turned the volume down to 13 which is perfect and played until 4 am. Works going to come early in the morning but it was worth it. (Can't wait to have my son wake up tomorrow and mash some buttons with me before work) The fierce attack on player 1 had good movement but didn't register well at first but after awhile it worked fine, which is good since thats one of the two buttons to "Tag" in my partner. Player 2 worked perfectly from jump street.

Thank you all for your help. I'm shocked at how helpful this forum is. Every other board I've joined while I wasn't new to those things (console video games, motorcycles etc) they basically would have laughed me off the board for something THAT simple and told me to get a gameboy haha. Guess being nice and helping out new people in other things has come around full circle and I'm very grateful.

Next to tackle is putting in a power supply to Soul Calibur. Any recommendations to which one to use? The old one isn't in there so I'm going to have to go in blind and guess which wires which and hope for the best. At least this one has a semi open back.

Sounds like the cabinets have seen a lot of usage. I suggest you install all new buttons and joysticks.

Buy IL Euro sticks from paradise arcade shop and if you prefer convex buttons (preferred by most giving game enthusiasts) get IL competition buttons. You will notice an improvement in your game with new sticks.

Convex buttons (I recommend for fighting have)

Concave buttons

Make sure you select cherry brand switches option on the buttons.

He's sold out of IL sticks. Go to www.therealbobroberts.com to order HAPP Competitions. http://therealbobroberts.net/parts.html#joysticks

To answer the question about what other games to run in the XvSF cabinet depends on what you feel like playing. There are dozens of other CPS1/CPS2 games you can run. Just search CPS1 or CPS2 on Wikipedia and you'll find a full game list. But with that setup, you can pretty much run any JAMMA game.

Another thing to be aware of is that CPS2 PCBs like the one you have all had suicide batteries. In short, each board had a battery that when it depleted would erase the encrypted data from the board and make it unusable. There are ways to save the board and/or revive it though. Not sure if yours has been saved. If the warranty seal is broken on your board, it may have been opened to do so. More info here (scroll down to CPS2 for your specific issue): http://www.arcadecollecting.com/dead/dead.html

I recommend you wait until Bryon gets the IL sticks back in stock. The difference between IL and HAPP sticks these days are quite noticeable.

Got that right. Nowadays I wouldnt go near a happ.

Bryan also sells new power supplies for $20 on his site. Use the coupon code forum (or was it forums) for free shipping over $100.

Soul calibur will be a jamma pinout, as its a namco system 12.

One of my favorite games, good luck getting it going! If the kick harness is missing (the L shaped row of pins on the back of the board) just let us know and one of us will get you the pinout.

Yes, the quality of IL is exceptional and Bryan is awesome, but I've used HAPPs from Bob in the past and have had no issues. Unless you are playing 24/7 at competition level, it really doesn't matter.

Does Bryan have a timeline of when he restocks? I probably need new sticks for my HS-1 actually.

I use the happs, honestly i've found the ILs can be clunky some times (i'm sure this goes for both sticks).

I also recommend bob as Paradise has been out the last few weeks like mentioned.

Here is a wiring diagram to go along with the above pinout. Don't just guess!!! lol

Which joystick you use doesn't matter as much on games like mortal kombat, street fighter style Capcom games are more sensitive and that is where the IL sticks are crucial IMHO.
