I have had a terrible time trying to get this system and my wife reminded me today that it was cursed. Here is the string of events that have been occurred...

- Back in October the release date of the Vita was announced for February. Originally, there was word that the system was going to be released at the end part of 2011 (I read this in July). I think I had read November 4th somewhere online. I was scheduled to go to the hospital in the middle of November so I figured I would sell my launch system PSP to help fund the Vita. I sold the PSP in July and was majorly bummed in October when I found out that I would have no game system to play while I was away at my hospital trip.

- I figured I would just pre-order my system when I got back from the hospital, but the trip cost me more than I expected and I ended up using my PSP money on my trip.

- I acquired more funds and was able to put some money down on a system. The employee at GameStop was overwhelmingly uneducated about the system. He told me the 3g would allow for anywhere online gaming and I have since learned that is not true. Oh well.

- Today, my launch model, fully backwards-compatible, PS3 bit the dust. I don't have regular TV so my PS3 is my entertainment lifeblood. It runs my NetFlx, my TV shows, my DVD/BluRay collection, my games, my music, and my photos. I have a BluRay player from my bedroom that I moved into the living room, but now I need to get my PS3 fixed or buy another one.

When my wife heard this she said that this PS Vita is a curse on my life and that it seems like I am not supposed to have it. She started saying this back in October, but the closer to February 15th I get the more her statement is making sense...ugh!

If it is anything like the launch of the original PSP don't do it. Worst gaming investment ever. Then the system price dropped like a rock. Then the hardware got significant revisions which made me feel even further ripped off.

Bad string of luck there.

The release in 2011 was only ever a rumor -- SCEA never put that date out there.
Can't you cancel your pre-order or switch it to the WiFi version if you don't want the 3G anymore?
2/15? You were going to pay the extra for the 1st week bundle? I'm willing to wait the extra week for the 2/22 full release.

I don't need a vita as to me it's an expensive piece of junk(up to you).

Also don't go to sony to fix that thing as you won't get your data back and they'll try to send you a slim or a refurbished model that's worse off than yours. Alot of people like Gopher mods and I almost sent my launch ps3 to them last year to get cleaned and have them put Arctic Silver 7 on the chips.(I might still do it)

The biggest turn off for me is the proprietary storage that is hellishly overpriced.

$100 for a 32GB memory card, that only works with the Vita? A 32GB SD card can be had for HALF that in stores...let alone cheaper online.
I bought a MS Duo adapter to use MicroSD for my PSP.

F**k Sony and their proprietary formats.

If I were you, I would cancel the pre-order and put the funds into getting a slim PS3. Everyone's right...there will be a lower price, hardware revisions, and 3rd party memory cards later, all of which will save you money when you decide to get it.

EDIT: Also, you can find a slim PS2 used for...$40 or less to get your PS2 library back in the mix. Yesterday I bought a used slim from my local used book store, for example.

I agree with the "wait and see" approach. After an absolutely horrible launch for 3DS and a variety of rants (at least one of which was on this very board), I preordered the Vita. It might have been that fact that I was getting back into my PS2, or the idea that Sony was holding back their launch until a suitable launch lineup could be assembled...I was sold. Fast forward a few months. The uber-pricey memory cards are a disgrace, the base price (sans pack-in or memory card) is high, the reception in Japan has been tepid...at best. Couple all of that with an industry that has absolutely RAPED the early adopter (see the aforementioned software updates, hardware redesigns, 3rd party cards, and price drops). Preorder cancelled.

Will I pick one up? Maybe...eventually. With everything available these days from consoles, to Steam, to....I suppose its obvious here......arcade-related stuff I just can't rationalize another handheld purchase.

Wait and See.

Cheers

Bob

Are you sure your PS3 can't be fixed? What actually happened? My sister in law is going to give me her fat PS3 that "stopped working" a while ago. Wonder if we can't make 1 good unit from the both??

I second trying to fix the launch unit, I just fixed my junker (mentioned on another thread here). It stopped reading discs, hung at power down and other odd problems. Turned out to be a bad hard drive. The bad news is there is a worldwide hard drive shortage due to flooding at the 3rd world factories. Heck, sell the broken backwards compatible one, they still bring good money for folks like me wanting an electronics project.

Smartphones, ipad, etc. = handheld console death. I lost my desire to buy anymore handheld consoles after the GBA SP. Handhelds have gotten way overpriced. Why the hell would you pay $249 for this when you can get a PS3 for not much more than that?! I'd definitely cancel that order and wait until these sit on the shelves and rot for a while and the price drops. If Sony and Nintendo still want to be successful in the handheld market, they probably will have to further integrate cellular technology and function into them.

I still don't really think we are quite there yet. Too many whiz-bang first party titles exclusive to one handheld or the other. Plus these damn touchscreen games still all feel like the exact same f'n game to me.

It will happen someday. But I'd wager that when it truly happens the handhelds will also have cell phone functionality. Which I can't wait for personally as it would probably make my handheld and cell phone upgrade decisions a lot easier. Plus when my free/discounted Verizon upgrades come up it will make me feel like I've gotten a huge bargain. :D

Maybe for you and some others, but for myself and many others...smartphones are a waste of money and they certainly can't replicate the experience of a dedicated unit for gaming, especially lacking controls...touchscreens blow.

The only reason I own a blackberry even, is for the QWERTY keyboard, and I bought mine on Ebay unlocked for like $40.
I will NEVER pay for a data plan or spend $400+ on a phone, EVER.

I think the statement that the "casual gaming" devices being the end of handheld consoles is based on the speculation that companies are figuring out they can make just as much money selling a million cheap "apps" that have a much lower investment and overhead compared to a high dollar investment real console release.

While this is certainly the case, I don't think it's a death sentence. Not yet at least.

I have never paid more than $100 for a phone, and never paid for an app on it (with exception to the Doom RPG for my first cell phone). I currently have a fairly nice android smart phone. It was free.

They will never replicate a real gaming experience, not until touchscreens can replicate the feedback of a button. My muscle memory is okay, but I always move back to where I think the button is only to find I'm on the wrong one.

Take in to account inflation and the original Game Boy which sold for $189.99 in 1989 comes to over $300 in today's funds.

If it helps your Vita decision, I've heard you can take one for a test drive at your local Gamestop.

I should probably mention that it's possible to sync a bluetooth controller to some smartphones (mine included), so that I can actually play Sonic CD on my phone with a gamepad.

That along with Tetris and Plants vs. Zombies, can keep me busy in a long cab or bus ride if need be.

And having only a single device to carry around is a plus.

I ended up cancelling my Vita pre-order and buying another PS3 system instead. I will probably get a Vita in a few months, but for now I really want my PS3 back. I got another system so I can take a crack at fixing my broken one without the worry that goes with having to get it fixed. The living room just isn't the same without the PlayStation. I appreciate the feedback everyone gave and it definitely helped in the decision making process.

I think you made the right decision.

However now that I'm thinkig about it... I saw you on PSN a couple of days ago (Thursday, Feb. 2nd)

Was that you at a friends house, or is it maybe time to change your password?

I'm done buying systems at launch, the really good games normally don't come out for a while anyway and you pick up a lot better deals after the launch fever is over.. i'll probably wait til they put a Battlefield on the vita with online multiplayer, that would be pretty sweet. Also looking forward to the next gen of portable Grand Theft Autos

I'll pass on buying during the launch, wait it out and pick one up off of craigslist for a nice discount.

I was on on Thursday. My system overheated and bit the dust just before lunch time. At first I thought it was strange that the BluRay indicator light went off when I still had a disc inside the system. Then the system shut itself off and it took me a few attempts to get the disc out before the system shut itself off again. I finally got the disc out after about an hour of letting the system cool. Then I unplugged the system and put it away for the time being. I'm going to attempt to repair it in the future. My replacement system should be here Tuesday afternoon.
