My Commodore 64 Repairs

I have the TFW8bit one but the no wires one looks like a nice setup. Daisy chaining the TFW8bit on a real drive is a bit problematic due to cable length.

Just tried it out, no issues. I'll shoot you a PM with where I got the d64 file

Your pm's motivated me to try the cracked version "crusadee" again and I did get it to work on the sd2iec but had to change the drive # back to 8 from 9. When I had sd2iec set as drive 9 it wouldn't get past the cracker intro screen, just reset back to it. So the cracked code must be looking for drive #8

This pic is what you get when trying an "original" file on the sd2iec. It looks like it is loading scenario but then will die at flashing cursor.

Awesome. Glad you got it going. I have been playing the classic Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders and Galencia. Just in little bursts

Let me know if you find any hidden gems :D

I want to pick up a C64 one of these days for cheap and fix it up. Sounds like a fun project. I never had one but my uncle did. The only game I remember playing on there is Gyruss, which was pretty fun.

advice .... re-seat stuff. The nice thing about these old computers is there is a ton of documentation on how to fix them. Not like the tech of today.

Finally finished fixing one non-working 1541's yesterday.

I have a stack of 5 or 6 pretty sure non working 1541 drives.

Is there a comprehensive repair guide for it?

I was doing some more reading today. Would probably start with the service manual here as the diagrams are fairly legible. There are also some good png of schematics.

This Sam's repair guide is a decent read but I couldn't find a pdf version w/ clear pics.

I made another video on adjusting 1541 drive speed, alignment, and adjust the head stop.

I also did one on the specific stepper motor signals and voltage even though I had already fixed mine. Probably less useful but I was so far down the stepper motor troubleshooting hole figured wth.

Figured I would bump this thread since discovering new klov member's @evietron excellent BackBit cart (looks way easier than s2diec) and her many c64 goodies at https://store.backbit.io/. Just ordered a BackBit. @RobMcRaf you need to check it out.
I have all of the devices offered by backbit, even the Vic-20 adapter (and I don't own a Vic-20, haha).

I really like the gen assister and using the arcade genesis joystick. Gives me a jump button in games that use up as jump. Great products. I ordered 5 cornbits play around with seeing how 2732 compatibility works. The backbit tester is a must buy, especially with the expanding testing support.

Im gonna have to try something myself. I have a PAL commodore 64 and 1541 that was given to me by a friend overseas. I can play most games but having an issue with 2, one of which I really wanted to play. Im sure it is just PAL incompatibility. Rocket Ranger(says pal incompatible on the box.so no surprise there), and Batman the caped crusader. Rocket ranger doesnt load(not surprised) but Batman does something else. The game loads to a white screen allowing you to select a game scenario, when you select the scenario, it starts to load But then hangs indefinitely. Blah.

Funny because I just heard of it and watched YouTube vid yesterday. How does it handle multi disk games like wasteland?

Last time I checked, last year sometime, it did not support multi disk games. I'll have to see if there has been an update :)

Dont mean to hijack this a little bit...but i am digging through a friends store cleaning out some cabinets. About 5 min ago, I just encountered a cache of commodore 64 stuff!! Im excited. Including a 1902 commodore monitor and software. Super mario print world isnt for commodore but its still cool!!

I think it has the same issues that sd2iec has. Basically, there are patched versions of multidisk games that work on s2diec and those work with the backbit.

I never tried the patched versions with the s2diec. Usually switching disks worked fine for me, but it is a little complicated to do, and if you mess up, no real way of getting back to where you were.

So after searching. I found a commodore 64 itself. A 1541. And software. Theres a lot of learning and educational stuff here. "Early Learning Series". How to use a commodore 64 software. Simons Basic.
