It's been completely hellcaded into a JAMMA Shinobi, but hopefully in time, I'll have her gleaming with all her 80s Tempesty-goodness once more. Hey, at least they left the original coin door in tact. :( Even the coin box reads "Trivia Whiz".. She's had a hard life...

Thats really cool. I love Tempest. You plan on restoring soon? It would be cool to see the restoration on this.

I will definitely be restoring it as funds, time, and luck allow.. I've even kicked around the idea of doing Tempest in JAMMA for now (if that's possible), just to bring it back to life without having to completely gut the thing all at once.

That wouldnt be a bad idea. At least it would be funtional till wiring time. Plus u can check boards!

Use Citristrip for the sides. You can use the same technique I used to remove the Shinobi art work prior to stripping (i.e. lightly score artwork with razor then use hairdryer to heat it up for peeling). Just go slow and don't let the decal get so hot with the hairdryer that you damage the Tempest art underneath.

Good luck!!

I'll give you $36 for it?

Just kidding of course, you've got a hell of a deal there, looking forward to seeing the restore.

I just thought of the same thing LOL. Yeah If your going to do a total restore is going to be a money pit no questions about it. Just getting the Tempest PCB and Monitor could easily set you back $350 or more.

I would make a Major Havoc out of that. I saw a Tempest conversion at the Seattle Show last year WOW!!!!

I think I have a bare control panel with a decent cpo. I need to go looking around in the basement. Its yours when I find it. Just pay the shipping. I've had 6 Tempests so I know I probably have something you'll need. Number 7 is having the monitor repaired and will be traded or sold working in the near future.

I was thinking the same thing mentioned above - money pit time.
If you are into using your time to restore it and money is no object then great! However I highly recommend you make a parts list immediately and know exactly what you're getting into before you start the resto. I fear you'll find that "good deal" when finished won't be a good deal at all. Sadly I think a ton of vectors meet their demise because of this very issue.

Congrats and all ... I think you'd be time and money ahead buying a non working "complete" Tempest even if it means having to wait a while longer.

That's what has always stopped me from buying a gutted Tempest cabinet in the past. That monitor price is always a ball buster when it comes down to it.:D

don't do it. Tempest is not that hard to find. You will spend more restoring it than it will cost you to buy one in decent shape.

If you had a cabinet with side art, then maybe, but even if you can clean the paint off it and expose nice art, it still will look bad.

Just quickly add up the parts you need and you will get to $400-$600 pretty fast and still have a cabinet with bad side art. Your really starting at zero.. No transformer and needing the smoked glass.. Structural damage too..

hell, there is a guy in new york looking to trade his tempest... I would think $500 max would get it...

i totally hear all of your feedback, but i felt compelled to buy this game. Yeah it will be alot of work, but they almost never show up here, and when they do POOF gone. Next thing u know it's on eGay for 1500 clams. Or, you have the example of the PA warehouse raid where there were 3 for sale, and some greedy dickbag fukin overlord dealer sucks up all 3 in one shot. So, now i can't say i didn't at least try.

Yeah, first thing I thought (after having recently restored one myself) is "There ain't no such thing as a $35 Tempest."

Nice score! But be ready for the long haul...

This is NOT a $35 Tempest.
If it will ever be a Tempest in the future, it will at a minimum be a $350 Tempest (without considering your time).

However, right now, it is a decent $35 Shinobi in an old Tempest cabinet. Since it's JAMMA, you can shove all kinds of boards in there. A 48-in-1 would be nice.

In my opinion, that would be a better route than trying to bring this corpse back to 80's life.

I saw that yesterday when I picked up the free BZ cab he had. Can't beat it for $35 and If I had the room I would have picked it up.

I have to agree though that it will be way to expensive to restore it to its former glory. Good luck though!

I don't know how you feel about MAME, but here is what I did with the empty Tempest cabinet that I picked up from Al Warner:

$100 for the cabinet, all artwork was intact and CP, spinner, and buttons were there. Installed an old used SVGA arcade monitor (bolted right in), used a PC with MAME, hacked a PS/2 mouse for the spinner and hacked a USB mouse for the buttons. So I had a playable Tempest for about $250.

The old SVGA monitor died so I replaced with a brand new Betson Tri sync and ran Tempest at 640x480 form the PC. Also loaded Tempest Tubes, Tac Scan, and Arkanoid.

So now for about $500, I have a nice, completely original-looking Tempest that plays Tempest, TTubes, Tac Scan, and Arkanoid, and is not plagued by the unreliability of original Tempest hardware.

Yeah, I know, it's not a vector monitor, but it still looks awesome, and I don't have to hold my breath everytime I turn it on...

Of course, if you go this route, you will still spend a buttload of $$$ because you will need to get artwork, CP, etc.

Still, something to consider.
