He's been practicing on junk boards once in a while so I thought I should offer him a chance at the big time. Here he is replacing caps and resistors. Not sure if this will be useful later in life or not but it's fun to see him taking an interest.

awesome man! I cant wait untill my son is old enough to actually help like that.

Tell him were honestly impressed! Just awesome man.

Ok, now I REALLY have no excuse not to do my own cap kit jobs... ! ;-)

I taught my wife how to solder... but I haven't done a cap kit yet, so I wouldn't expect her to.

Did he discharge the monitor, too?

On the 6100 you don't need to discharge the tube to remove the deflection board. And the power supply has already been gone through. So no, he didn't. But I wouldn't hesitate to have him do that under supervision.

1) Great job, kiddo!

2) Next time disconnect the neckboard and leave it with the frame, or keep it separate. No use having to deal with it while working on the deflection board....

Sweet, My kid loves My Hanko Desoldering thingie what ever it is. He is nine I let him play on old boards. Looks like time for a cap kit for him.

That is so cool dude. Did he enjoy doing it? Do you think he'll follow your footsteps?

He enjoyed it. He asks if he can help every time I start working on a game. Or a car for that matter. No idea about following in my footsteps. Will there even be a need for soldering skills when these guys are adults? It would be kind of neat to think that the kids would want to inherit them and take care of them some day.

My other boy doesn't have the interest. He's 9 and is more into art and music at this point. He's invented a new comic strip that he wants to market some day. Definitely let him give it a try if you think he's up to it. Or even if you don't. Just be there to make sure he doesn't get hurt or burn the house down!
