There were LPs and CDs released of Sega game music in Japan. I think the Sega sound team has/had their own band as well.

I have this one:

The drum samples don't sound so hot on a hi-fi  These are directly taken from the PCBs it sounds like. Contains music from Out-Run, Space Harrier and Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Alex Kidd on this appears to be re-recorded.

I also have a Namco LP produced by Haruomi Hosono of YMO that's more or less the same thing as above with Namco music, but has re-arrangements of the Xevious theme and the Galaga "got a high score, but not 1st place" song.

Man Steve, just when I think you can't surprise me with more Japanese goodies/knowledge, you come up with more cool stuff to share. Awesome! :)

For those who haven't seen it... the OutRun series got its own 11-disc 20th Anniversary CD box set in Japan a few years ago:

Plus the Frogger tunes were swiped from a children's song

and other songs in the game were "appropriated" from these Animes:

Wow, that's awesome! I love hearing where these games get their original tunes and sfx. So many games have 'borrowed' tunes from childrens' songs and other sources. I see another thread incoming. :)

...and there's more music programmed in Frogger that was never heard until this guy found it, fixed a bug in the music code, and disabled the timer so it all plays:

The guy who wrote the music for Crue Ball is Brian Schmidt, and he did soundtracks for a lot of arcade games and pinball machines, including Black Knight 2000, which has arguably the best soundtrack in pinball. His style is easily recognized.

That's a good bit of history. BK2K has pretty amazing audio.

Well, if we're including Sega's console games in this thread:

Jet Grind/Set Radio - 'nuf said.
