Am I the only one that think multi-arcade cabinets kill the fun of the originals? I like the feeling of playing a game on an original cabinet.

I originally thought about buying one before I got my first cabinet, but now I don't think I would ever want one in my collection.

Does this make me hardcore collector?

The people who constantly bitch about multi-games kill the fun. Don't like them? Don't build or buy one. Why disparage something that others enjoy? I have a few more games than you do... including a number of multigames (of varying sort). Does that make me a harder core collector? Nope.

Do people constantly bitch about multi's? I wouldn't know because I am new to these forums.

Do you consider my question a bitch? I thought it was a interesting question that would relate to this hobby. I don't recall insulting people who prefer to have them, only asking if there is anyone else who shares my view.

I am curious about what others in the community think and don't consider the question a complaint, but only a matter of preference.

my 4 yr old grandson loves the variety on the multi games.
He gets bored by just one game on one machine and asks where the other games are.
when he gets bored of those he asks to have the xbox 360 turned on. it's just games.

I don't see any harm or foul. on my joust I made a different CP for the multi games and just draped the jamma stuff in their. it can go back to original joust with minor changes and the original CP. you'd never know it had been running multi game previously.

Sorry... touchy subject. Yeah, multigames get picked on quite a bit here. Oftentimes for due cause (destroying a dedicated cabinet for example), but many times for no reason what so ever other then for the poster to feel good about his decision not to go with multigames.

I'd venture to guess that most folks here would prefer a dedicated cab over a multigame cabinet... unfortunately the sad realities of "space" and "cost" prohibit many from being able to collect a bunch of cabinets.

That is where multigames oftentimes come in.

Welcome to the community... sorry for my initial post...

ha ha, i see your moving icon name, frizzle.
tell us the story on what happened with omega race.
just played that on mame earlier.

we need to hear this story, should be entertaining....

There is a nice little thread in the Repair forum.

Abridged version:

Worked. Cap Blew. Stopped working. Tried to fix. Spent much time. Got things a little better but not fixed. Managed to cross + with - while doing some testing of a Voltage Regulator. Smoke. Trace burned/broken. Essentially ALL the work I'd done up to that point UNDONE. Gave up. Sent to Tester in Canada.

NOW...he's worked on it, got it back to where I was... but is having a fun time as well... which makes me feel better. Had it been a simple fix I'd have felt like a complete dumbass.

:D

As Frizz mentioned, multigames are bitched about quite a bit on here. Sometimes for good reason, sometimes not.

In a perfect world, I would never have a multigame. But, alas, I have a space for arcade games that is 11 x 12'. I run a 60-1 in my Pac cabaret using a Lizard Lick adapter, so no original wiring has been harmed.

Guess what cabinet gets played most when guests are over?

I'm building a Multi- for my basement. I can hold 15 games... tops. I am near that threshold.

My original MAME cabinet that I never finished was an empty Dynamo cab. The main reason I am building a MAME cab is so I can have some 4 player games for parties... like TMNT or Simpsons.

I may or may not do a 60-in-1. I definitely wouldn't convert a dedicated cab.

frizzle- i've heard omega race is a game that requires have a few to keep it going. not sure i'd have the gumption to try owning one.....

I know someone that has well over 100 old arcade games being horded. half are in a metal storage barn by a field. other half are in a run down building with pigeons.

what's worse. a few games getting conversions and played in a home. or games being horded and going to ruin by extreme weather changes and varmits. he isn't converting any games. but they'll be piles of nothing before anyone ever enjoys them.

it's all perspective. these old cabinets that are particle board never will be great works of american furniture art.

Multis are bad unless you are profiting from them. MAME will kill your children and ruin your life in every way. You should only have the originals and you should be willing to hold on to them indefinitely waiting for someone to buy them.

I think that about sums up the general consensus about multis here.

I have dedicated originals and a MAME cabinet, and my life is just fine. I enjoy all of them.

I think you mean that MAME kills the fun, especially when build badly with improper control - or worse, too many - for the games to be played most often (nothing like 7 buttons to play Donkey Kong).

I don't see anyone complaining about playing Frogger in a Galaga cab, or Xevious in a 1942 cab. If you're really into playing, you don't even notice the cab anyway. You just need proper controls, good sound (as good as the multi's allow anyway), a good picture, and a stool to sit on....

My 60 in 1 on an LCD gets more play than all my games. Most people I know outside of collectors dont care about the cab and think the option of choosing so many different games without moving to another cab is the coolest.

This is why I love Neo-Geo because you can have your cake and eat it too!

I don't really care for mame... Having 10,000 games to pick from with a franken panel to play them all is a little rediculous!

Back to the original question.... yes, I prefer the original feel of the original game. Take Galaga - I played for years on the original stuff. When I play on a multi-game cab, it just doesn't feel right because joystick isn't locked to left and right, but slops all over the place.

Due to space limitations, I don't have a Galaga cabinet. What I do have is a Ms. Pac-man cabinet and a real Galaga control panel. When I'm in the Galaga mood, I swap out the control panels and hook up a different power supply and harness to play.

Would that be easier to do on a 60 in 1 board, hell yea. But I put in the effort anyway, because it just feels more natural and comfortable.

as a fan of pop art, i suspect that in the long run some of these particle board cabinets, if the art is present and original, will become quite valuable regardless of what is inside of them. of course that wont be for a couple hundred years, but i do expect it to happen eventually.

I see nothing wrong with Multi's.. To each his own.

I have an XXXX in 1 cab and its great for playing games that dont require
special controls and I can play a LOT more games then I could ever fit.

I still have 18+ dedicated cabs. Probably 1/2 are vectors.

Multis are great and keep the interest in the hobby. What I like to do is restore a junker cab to original art, jamma it and then put a multi in wired only to the dedicated control panel. If I did not have a couple of multigames I would not have room for a couple of pins too. If game is dedicated I leave it alone and restore as is unless it is a bad game not worth the effort.

Multis I have DK (multi with Clay's Arcade SD), reproduction Dragon's Lair (multi running Daphne and all laser games), Starwars (with ESB switcher), Stargate Mini with JROK board to play both defender/stargate. I always put a multi hack or multiboard in Pacs and wire 1 and 2 as fire buttons so it stays original or if I want to spend the $$$ then add the trackball panel kit for a 60 in 1 or preferably an arcade shop multi Jamma. For Defender I have one with a custom MW panel and all Defender Art also it rocks and sits at a buddys house also beside a fully restored taito 60 in 1 with all Qix art. I only have room for 12 games in my basement at the momement. The nice thing is the jamma multis are always a quick fix if you have a spare boards and monitors.

I would rather have 4 or 5 dedicated cabs mint, a few multis, and a few pins then all dedicated as variety makes a game party a lot more fun. I also have a wall mounted LCD and XBOX 360 for fighters on the bar with 2 Tekken wireless sticks.

What I admire is well done scratch builds for multi's. Also Mame with Hyperspin and simple controls is great.

60% of the dedicated games I have sit in storage due to lack of space and the fact that friends who are not collectors want multis and in new cabs. New cabs being available cheap are the best thing that has happened over the last couple of years.

Then again if my wife were to sell my Computer Space and some kid converted it to mame that would be a different story.
