Multigames are ok but Mame is not?

No BSOD

My multi-game never gives me the "blue screen of death"...that's why!

hehe...

This thread's been done before, but I'll happily chime in.

To me, MAME and multis are the exact same thing.

I am not against either. I like both.

Unless.

A lot of damage/modifying is done to the cab. And by that, I mean a rare cab. If it's a Pole Position or Ms. Pacman, there are a gazillion of them. If you turn a Star Wars into a lounge chai... I mean, multi, then, erm... Shame on you. Or something. And then there are those retards that put an airplane landing strip control panel on their MAMEs. Ugh!

Most of us got into this hobby via MAME...

I was wondering why many of you think it is ok to make a multigame but not a Mame?

I think most people that dont like MAME dont like Multi's either. Unless the Multi uses factory hardware (Pac 24-n-1 for example). They cry foul about the "emulation" not being the same.

normaly when people mame they add an unnecessary amount of joysticks and buttons

Depends on the multigame for some. There are some multigame kits that run off original hardware... some hardcore (aka anal) collectors have much less problem with them as they run off the original hardware (IE: Starwars/ESB multikit, MultiPac (many varieties), Space Invaders Multi kit, etc)... though most of the hardcore (aka anal) collectors absolutely despise 48-in-1/60-in-1 multigames as much as they do MAME... because, well, it IS MAME.

Anyone who says they hate MAME but they're ok with these Chinese multigame boards evidently aren't aware that they are running MAME. Hell, even the Arcade Shop Multigame board is really no different though it's suppose to be running on something OTHER than MAME... it's still emulation.

The Capcom CPSI 14-in-1 and CPSII 18-in-1 are running on actual hardware as well... though most collectors couldn't give a crap about them because they're usually running in generic Dynamo cut-corner cabs and well, most of the real anal retentive collectors absolutely abhor JAMMA... almost as much as MAME.

The reason these folks hate MAME so much is they feel MAME has cheapened their collections... it's also a proven fact that many unknowing (or just stupid) people MAME classic arcade cabs that could have otherwise been restored.

Finally there are many out there that just jump on the "Hate MAME" bandwagon even though they themselves have never once played a MAME powered cab.

Most are good people ... regardless of where they stand. Just accept them for who they are and all will be fine.

:D

Yeah, that is out of control.

I've got 2 8 ways, 6 buttons each side (plus coin and start) and a 3: trackball on my MAME cab. Theres also a volume up/down, pause and exit game button but thats it.

Matt

Frankly, I don't care too fuckin much for either - If you're going to download stuff on MAME, you may as well cheap out all the way, buy some crappy $50 "arcade sticks" off eBay, mod them or whatever as you so choose, hook 'em up to a regular computer, and call it a day.

Arcade games are arcade games. Emulators are computers. Why would you go and put a computer in an arcade game? You could do what you're trying to do with a cabinet a whole lot cheaper by forgoing the whole cabinet thing.

I (apparently unlike some) got into this by going to arcade auctions since I was somewhere between 5 and 10 years old; I'm 23 now.

I have no problem with MAME, or with using a multiboard in a way that doesn't destroy an original game.

That said, hacking up an original cabinet to throw a PC in there.... just dumb.

Yeah i got started in this because of mame but then when I found out how easy it was to fix the game I didn't want to maim that cab. I never did make a mame cab. Some people do really mess up nice cabs with that crap but it seems like some do a really nice job too. So I guess mostly you guys don't want people making crap out of nice cabs, myself included.

I can think of one really simple reason, space. I've only got room for 5-6 games in my house. I've got the "must have" that I want but the other games are really for the wife and kids. If I bought the 5-6 games that I want they wouldnt get any play.

I play my Robotron and Tron and the rest of the family plays the MAME and the two multigames.

Simple...

Some would ask why someone would stick a big ass wing on a late 80's Mazda RX7... it's certainly not to aid in "traction"...

;)

I guess I'd have to say the logical conclusion is to just run MAME on your computer, and use the space for 5 or 6 games for a JAMMA cab, a Neo Geo cab, and 3 dedicated cabs.

The wing is a bit bigger than I wanted, but was about the only thing that wasn't stock, hideous, or obscenely expensive. Also, frankly, it is for traction. May sound absurd, but it helps keep the car stable at higher speeds. While the car's relatively near stock power for the time being, it'll eventually get an agressive port job and a large Camden blower. I had the car repainted due to an accident, and it was more logical to throw on the wing during the paint job than to mess with having the whole thing painted all over again if I was to wait 'til after modifying it to put the wing on. Thanks for the concern though, sweetheart. ;)

Oh, plus I'm a douchebag, and feel it only appropriate to announce my presence as such.

i think mame is just craptastic and multi cabs are not that great either. i build them and sell them when i have time but after the 5 or six im in the middle of are finished i will only take them upon preorder. i wouldnt have one in my house.
but multi such as multi williams, multi mylstar 96-1 are a different story. they are well emulated and quality hardware that matches the standards of factory(or surpases)

I wonder if I get a bigger joystick if I can improve my scores.

I wonder if you got a bigger mouth if I could hump it harder.

A large wing provides downforce, which is useful at high speeds. Unless your "joystick" is just plain too small to handle properly, a larger one will clearly have no beneficial effect.
Therefore your analogy is illogical.
Quod Erat Demonstratum, bitch.

Wow sorry if I insulted you in some way.

Tell me if, in context, that does not look like a blatant jab at the spoiler. It looks like it to me, and I responded in kind. If I misunderstood your intent in commenting on a bigger joystick immediately after a big wing, I aoplogize.

Actually I was talking about the big funky control panel but I see where it might have come off like that.

Oh, my mistake. Clearly I read way too much into the context of your previous post, and misunderstood what you were saying. Plus I've been around the assholes of neo-geo.com for far too long. I apologize.

As for the control panel, I've seen worse.... maybe not larger 4- or 8-way joysticks necessarily, but a CP that was at least at convoluted, at the Chicago coin-op show, on another MAME-cab.
