so i guy at work today was telling me that his wife wants a stand up arcade machine, when he says the name galaga, i proceed to tell him the value and how much he will have to pay, i then realize that he has no interest in the game being original whatsoever. So i told him i could build him a MAME unit out of a jamma cab that i have, and informed him that i would put other classic games on it aswell. So my question is, would it be cheaper and easier to hook a multicade board up, and does it just plug n play into jamma harness? or would it be cheaper to go mame (have to get arcadevga and ipac $150 combined)

multi jamma. costs a little more depending on which board you get but its SOOOOOOOOOOO EASY. if they want galaga it would be way cheaper to just get a 48 in 1 board. dirtsarcade sells them pretty cheap.

Not sure how a multi-JAMMA can be more expensive once you consider a MAME requires a JPAC, ArcadeVGA and then the computer itself to run MAME. Figure in the hours it will take to configure MAME and you have a no-brainer. Go with a multi-JAMMA...

...that said, you will get WAY WAY WAY more games with MAME, but that sounds like it's not high up on the guys list.

Multi-Jamma = $135-$260 depending on which you want...

MAME = $150 for just the JPAC and ArcadeVGA...factor a computer in there and the price goes up.

ok the cab that i am gonna use has a horiz G07 in it, i am able to turn it, but will that jammacade support that? also the cab already is set up and working with a game, the game only has 1 joystick and 2 buttons, will that be enough for the 48in1 or will i need more buttons?

well it can be cheaper if youve got a computer laying around. But even with computers laying around i opt to go with multi jammas cause you dont need to F with it.

Actually you don't need AracadeVGA anymore. Just Soft15Khz - FREE. Works with most regular video cards. I think that's all ArcadeVGA is - a regular video card with firmware modifications....

So MAME cost is JPAC + cab + computer + setup time. You'll pay more in setup time, but get more in number of games you can play.

And if your friends would like to play the old console games from NES and such, forget about it. MAME all the way. Just get a cab with a 25" monitor so the vertical games don't look so small.

Also factor in that any old computer will emulate Galaga perfect. You can go on craiglist and go in the free section and get a computer for free that is even too powerful for the job.

ok back to the question, will i have to do anything to convert my horizontal monitor to vertical aside of move it on the brackets??? and is 2 buttons enough for the games on the 48in1?

You may have to deal with the monitor frame sticking out the back, depending on your cabinet.

You may have to manually degauss when you tip the monitor on it's side.

Other than that, you're good to go.

As for the buttons, 2 is fine for the CP, but you do want two more for the service and test buttons inside the coin door.

I believe that 3 buttons are needed for one of the games. As for the monitor I believe youll need a new monitor frame.

The only 3 button game on a 48-in-1 is Super Breakout and Super Breakout sucks BAD with a joystick, so you have no problems with going 2.

The 60-in-1 does also have Gunsmoke, which sucks with 1 button, but is pretty damn fun with 3.
